  • With childlike wonderment I explore the perimeter of this abandoned home, peering in the window panes, many which have been busted out. The door is padlocked, to keep me out. Curiousity burns inside me as I imagine the lives of the people that once called this place home. The door is my time machine, allowing me to travel back in time. How I would love to visit my grandparents when they were young, and learn first hand about their lives before I was ever born. This abandoned house can be found on Hwy 412 in Gordonsburg, TN. • for those of you who doubt there is life after death, i have finally captured photographic evidence that spirits do roam the halls of the buildings i take pictures of. this was easily one of the most terrifying experiences i have ever had and i am glad that the ghost only wanted to bum a smoke and not devour my soul. / —-—-—-—-—-—-- / photo taken at algonquin river state hospital / more of my work is available at www.abandonedamerica.org

  • this is where they took it all from you. / it wasn’t when you were arrested, or in the courts, / or even in the mazes of bars and locked doors - / it was here that you got to watch everything you had / slip between your fingers into the void of the past. / under the ever-watchful eyes of the guards (who hated you) / and surrounded by your fellow inmates (who hated you) / you had your own little show: / witnessing the few people left who loved you drift away. / your friends came less and less often until they vanished. / your family stayed longer, but everytime they visited you you saw / the bottomless sorrow, anger, guilt, condemnation in their eyes. / here you saw reflected through the thick plexiglass / their reaction to the animal you had become, herded / to and from your cell with batons and rifles, / the omnipresent threat of solitary, of other things / too horrible for them to contemplate. and yet every time they looked at you, / this was what they saw. then there was your wife, / each time a little more distant, a little colder / until the day she came with the divorce papers / and you could see in her features that her love for you / was beyond pleas or threats or excuses. / it was gone. / your children grew by leaps and bounds, each time / bigger, less comprehending, more alien to you - / their lives comprised of things you would never know or see / and your life one you could only hope they’d never know firsthand. / these were the things you thought about. maybe it felt unjust, / but your opinions no longer mattered. you had been ejected, / banished into some small forgotten corner where all that was left / that made you human faded away through this window right in front of you / and your opportunities and hopes shrank until they were such / that nobody, not even you, could see them any more. / this was the nature of your dwindling world. / it got smaller and smaller every day. photo taken at john f. grantham correctional facility / all rights reserved. more of my work is available on www.abandonedamerica.org

  • i wrote this back in april when i was angry about seeing yet another place like this closed for good. forgive me for the rant. i hope you all don’t hate me for posting it. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— if you look around in the area you live in, really open your eyes a bit, you’ll see / the decaying bodies of industrial giants that litter the countryside / and that the few remaining active manufacturing sites are disappearing / at a rate that should terrify us all. / we sat complacently by as / the places that created our prosperity were murdered / by some serial killer, some great economic devastator - / and we are slowly beginning to wake up and wring our hands as / more and more of our loved ones join the ranks of the unemployed / and businesses report poor sales performance that / inevitably leads to more cutbacks. it only follows to reason that / we may start looking for who is to blame for this catastrophe. / politicians are the easy place to start – / both the republican and democrat parties had a hand in drafting and passing / the nafta (north american free trade agreement) and cafta (central / american free trade agreement) bills / that have allowed millions of jobs to be shipped off to third world countries / where our clothes and goods can be made essentially by slaves – people / who have no expensive unions or labor and environmental laws to protect them, / by women and children who are working for pennies to our dollar. / we can blame the business leaders, who have allowed / the constant quest to raise profit margins to blind them / to the good of their own nation, and now wonder why / people in it are unable to afford the goods they are trying to sell. / certainly shutting down american factories to move them abroad has nothing to do with it. / but if you really want to complete the forensic analysis of a site such as this, / and want to openly and honestly assign blame where blame is due, / i challenge you also to go look in your closet, to read the labels on your clothes. / i can predict with absolute confidence that you will find / most of the items in your house were made in taiwan, china, india, mexico, and so on. / we voted for that with what counts most – our money - / at corporate giants who drove out / independant businesses with greater stakes in their communities / because they cost less, they carry more. / we never asked why, or how, this could happen. / we found it easier to point fingers, to condemn the wastefulness of others / yet we are the ones who made it profitable / because our insatiable appetites eclipsed any sense of consequences. / i am as culpable as anyone else. / the shirt i am wearing now was made in honduras, my jeans in hong kong. / i held the blade with all of you. i killed this clothing factory and all the rest too. —-—-—-—-—-—— / more of my work is available at www.abandonedamerica.org. photo taken at la mort’s coat factory.

  • As man, perhaps, the moment of his breath, / Receives the lurking principle of death, / The younger disease, that must subdue at length, / Grows with his growth, and strengthens with his strength. - Alexander Pope / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- photo taken at portecello communicable disease hospital / more work is available at my website, www.abandonedamerica.org – and i just added a huge new gallery yesterday, so check it out if you get a chance!

  • Odd ruin with round and square window. Photo based illustration.

  • This is the only building that remains of the original Mudlavia Springs Hotel complex, originally built in 1898. The original Victorian building-once a playground of the rich and famous of the world-burned down in 1920, as did two subsequent business ventures on the same site.

The original Victorian building-once a playground of the rich and famous of the world-burned down in 1920, as did two subsequent business ventures on the same site. (The title comes from a line in “Hotel California” and also refers to the HE next to the doorway, which looks to me like an unfinished word.)

  • Left alone..abandoned..to withstand the storm alone..once filled with love.laughter…and energy..Now is still..lifeless..and untouched…voices fill the halls, yet no one is there..memories fill the walls..yet so warn, torn, and broken only tears remain…The waiting never ends..the ache burns within.. Echo’s of long ago run through the halls..but they are only echo’s of the past, it’s the only thing left..The pain is there..The emptiness and hollow feeling goes on..and..on.feeling like it is never going to end. / They come and they go..touching..opening..closing..pounding,..but never do they stay..they slam the door and walk away, never to be seen again…One day this has to end..there has to be peace..harmony and life again.. / Tires approach…silence follows.. Then the silence is broken.. there is laughter in the air..sunlight shines through the window..warm breezes fill the rooms..a sigh of relief is let loose from the beams.. for the sign now says SOLD! Nikon D90 / 18-200mm VR Lens This house is in Sebawaing Michigan, it is abandoned and yes it is really for sale..I so wanted to peek in the windows, but there was also a NO Trespassing sign up and this is on a main street, so I didn’t want to take a chance..
