Today, I decided to visit Bangour Hospital. I thought it would be an abandoned hospital with a few outbuildings….but I was verrrrry wrong! The hospital itself has been demolished, but the village is still there. It is huge, a whole village abandoned! There must be over 20 buildings abandoned including the nurses accomodation, clinics, shops, admin, fire and safety offices, and even a church! The amazing thing is, despite being abandoned for so many years, the place is still in fairly good condition and some of it is even powered still, I got the fright of my life when i pressed the light switch and the whole room lit up!! I only managed to get into one of the buildings, but i have plans to go back at some point to investigate some more. Oh, and I nearly forgot….any film buffs reading this, they used some of the buildings here for exterior shots for the film “The Jacket” with George Clooney!

So I’ve been spending alot of time at the abandoned nursing/mental facility. There’s so much to photograph and document, its completely where my interests lie, the gritty urban street life/ ex facilities of care. As the weekends go by, gradually more gets looked at, photographed and uploaded to both my Flickr and Redbubble account. This site holds a variety of interesting settings and scenes which I can’t wait to explore and use in some future shoots and ideas. I’m still exploring this site, so be patient with my uploads. Ive found something that captures my interest so much, I’ll try and only upload the winners. my Flickr address: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25108384@N05/ Thanks all for watching and seeing what I’m up to, I’m sure soon enough I’ll be finished and I can get back to whatever it was I was doing

I’ll be here when you are gone / Love’s song echoing in my brain / I’ll be here when you leave / Passion singing through my limbs / As though you were still here with me / I’ll be here when you stay / And I am gone… In my thoughts / In a place I cannot take you / A place only I know / No chaperone – No map marked with red… / Directions unsaid / I’ll be here when you are gone / When trying to understand just gets too hard / And my need for reassurance / just gets too draining / High maintenance / Too high / Too much / Too long / Saps the spirit / Drains the soul / Easier to let it go / I’ll be here / when you are gone..

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/970694/fighting_for_preservation_worcester.html?cat=72 A quick article about the demolition of Worcester State Hospital to make way for a new facility. Every click counts (towards a paycheck for me) and I included photos with the article and thought you all might get a kick out of it! Enjoy!

There’s an application on Facebook called Photo Competition. It’s actually how I heard about Redbubble months ago. I really enjoyed the fun atmosphere. (psst… notice the past tense). A topic for a competition came up, it was “Abandoned.” So I entered my Neglected Teddy picture. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the story of the bear, please check it out in my portfolio. It wasn’t staged. I came home from school to find this bear, which I took a picture of. It’s the same picture you see there, but I did bump the contrast up a smidgen and turned it black and white with a slight sepia tone. I have been on this Photo Competition application for about 6 months. I enter usually one competition a week, sometimes a couple more depending on if I have something to enter. I have never placed higher than 8th. Until now. I came in 3rd in the Abandoned topic with “Neglected Teddy.” In this application the top 3 get featured in the Hall of Fame section. I was very happy. I didn’t think I’d do that well and I was very glad people thought 1) my entry fit the topic and 2) that it was good enough to come in 3rd. I came in 3rd to two very very talented (and at least 1 professional) photographers. Then I read the discussion board. Why? I don’t know. I have avoided that thing like the plague because people I have noticed the postings have been increasingly negative. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some very helpful, supportive people on there, but you do get the people who are either mad their photo didn’t receive any comments or votes and they want everyone to know what entry is theirs so they can go vote/comment (which defeats the purpose of the entries being annonymus if you ask me). Or they’re complaining that people are being “too harsh” with their comments. Or in my case…. People think the photo that came in 3rd (mine) was deserving of it. Rude. I mean, that’s fine if they think that but is it necessary to publicize that? How would that make other people feel if they were told that FINALLY they had a hall of fame winner, but it doesn’t deserve it? I’m about to can that application. It’s too much of a headache. It really hurt me today that people just can’t be happy for other people. I’m happy for everyone who wind up making it into the Hall of Fame. People who make it there all deserve it. They’re voted on by their peers and they all are FANTASTIC shots. Why is it that now that it’s my turn to be one of those fantastic shots, I have people shooting it down? Oh, and one of the big reasons why they think it was undeserving was because it seems staged. Okay. It’s photography. Yes I lined up my shot and tried to make it look good. I guess that’s a bad thing?

I’ve taken this opportunity to humbly promote myself as much as humanly possible here on RedBubble. Now linked on my profile overview are my photo blog which I maintain on my own, PolarityPhoto of which I am co-owner, EatingThePaste which is just a mess of hilarity which ensues in the course of a day in my life, and a link to all of the pointless drivel for which I miraculously get paid to write on Associated Content! So if you have a sense of humor, or feel yours needs a jump start, or you’d just like to see the stories behind my shots and what PolarityPhoto and I are up to, check them out!

I have an upcoming set of images to upload, Of the abandoned power station near the Anzac bridge. This is my first time shooting a series of this nature and I ask for your advice on the pictures I post in how to better this interest I have. I am fascinated by the shells of ruined and disused buildings. The so called “Skeletal” remains of man made architecture make me almost feel like a modern day Indiana Jones. Who knows what could be lurking inside.. - Tim.

Well, who knows who is reading this, but hey, the exams (in part, but not exclusively) have quietly ravaged my ability to keep up to date with the project, not to metion lack of skill and lack of immediate resources. Most dates have multiple pictures and the other plan was to merge them all into a book – currently, this would appear to be the best way of presenting my shots as while they are all alright, few hold together of their own accord, and none seem to be provoking any response (despite the fact the only one’s up are not all or necessarily the best). / I also seem to be taking a lot of flowers, and as I’m not even half as good as dear Ingz and her absolutely stunning pics (we love you Ingz!) I fear I should back off! XD / Moreover, forget-me-nots have been INCREDIBLY hard to get hold of. I’m halfway to trying to buy them at a garden centre or something as I love them so, but the only place where I’ve seen them this month is alongside the road up to school (the WRONG side) and in a flower bed, bang-slap in the middle! Difficult times for the self-conscious, too-young-to-die photographer! =P / I’ve got a couple of okay ones on black or Lollie-shaped backgrounds, but nothing to write home about, so to speak. Alas, the poor, short-lived things may be gone by the time I get back, let alone try to snap again. Ah well. (Beware, increased poetic rambling may occur beyond this point) May is nearly over now however, just around eight days and then it will be June. As far as I’m concerned, it turns summer. It smarts of tourists frying themselves into yellow beaches. And what has May been? Just a touch of spring it seems, gone so fast much like everything else. Waited for, adored, reveled in but still, impossible to hold on to; it’s Time. It’s seems almost like I missed it, trying to look at every day and see the significance of May in them. Even on my favourite day the glimpse of joy was fleeting under a cloudy sky. / Of course, each day is what you make it, but we are not the only things alive – and all these living things come awakened fresh into the spring, not yet lazily drunk on summer’s mellow fruitfulness, but born freely, brightly into the youthful sunshine. To move out of spring, is to long for it, yearning to be young again, yet while it is here, all is new. / And hurrah for that. =) To the singular inspiration ^^

How many times should a man return to an abandoned building in Kuching Sarawak? I ask you to give this question some considered deliberation as I have no idea. The cultural attaché has just returned from an individual exploration having returned to the site of his original discovery – the abandonment. He is grinning like a Cheshire cat. As fate has it the cultural attaché has happened upon a model shoot in his very own abandonment and was cordially invited to come on in and shoot along with the professionals. With all the airs and graces and contradictions of a cultural attaché in urbex mode he just casually strolled on in there and shot away, he tells me that he was conscious not to over stay his welcome.

It can go without being said that the state of Michigan is not doing very well in the economic food chain. In addition to that Wall Street Journal (Online) stated that Detroit, Michigan is the “Abandoned Building Capitol in the World”. Me being the photographer -with what I would like to think is an adventurous side, went with one of my best friends and my dad to Detroit. We left home at 7:30am and got to Detroit about 10:30(ish) am. We explored our first couple buildings from the outside. Then drove around to see what else was abandoned. My friend, Nina, jumped to excitement when we found and old motel that was lacking a front door and sat behind open gates (we didn’t actually want to do any breaking and entering; breaking being the keyword there). So we went inside. The windows were all bordered up and everything inside on the first floor was pitch black. We guided our way by our hand-held -flashlights. It was very obvious the place was still in use due to the pile of coats and recent bottle caps. But yet we continued to venture inside this place with our hearts pounding, our stomachs heavy, and our bladders on the edge of their seats. We slowly crept upstairs, my dad leading the way followed by me then Nina. And we were on the second floor. We had a door in front of us. We had a choice -to open it -or not to open it. Our curiosity prevailed over our butterflies in our stomachs. We walked in and found more doors. My dad went in the right door, which was empty. Nina followed me into the door on the left. “This room smells like shit!” I yelled. / -“Look what is all over the room, Amber.” My dad responded. He was referring to all the poop on the walls in the the chimney in front of me. I took my picture and left that room. After that my dad was going to the next floor but Nina and I were terrified but knew we couldn’t leave anyone alone. Finally, we convinced my dad not to go on to the next two floors and we walked outside with relief! We went to the back to look at the other buildings (which were in the same condition). Nina and I went behind the building we started from and got pictures from the outside,. I had my camera up to my face when out of no where I was pulled back by the shoulder of my hoodie. And forced into a 180 and heard a shriek behind me. It was Nina, she was panicking but neither me or my dad knew why. She was panicking so badly she was flailing her body as if she was running- but going no where. She finally spat out that there was a big man inside the building we were just inside and that we had to go Now! Not feeling welcomed we got outta there. We didn’t let that stop us; we came all this way to photograph the abandoned buildings of Detroit. After some lunch and watching some of the OSU vs Michigan game we braved out into the buildings again. You can read this and compare it to some of the photos I got from today. Everything I have mentioned REALLY did happen. I don’t think I will ever do it again. /
