    Hey guys, yesterday i broke into an abandoned old boys home near me. I figured i never do the whole ‘blog’ thing so il give it a go by telling you my story about my escapades yesterday. so i ended up taking my little brother as no one else would come with me…him being 13 i felt a little guilty breaking an entry with a teenager, but figured i could put the rap on him if we got caught lol.not really. Plus he’d broke in before and knew the way in :-D so me and my bro, acting all stealth, ran past the CCTV and i push him up one of the walls only to find a car practically running past my shoes. I smiled politely as i lowered my brother and pretended that i was purely lifting him to see the lovely view of the decaying building…and then proceeded in lifting him up again. When we got down into the courtyard, i found it hilarious that there was a nice pair of ladders to a smashed window that led to the school kitchen and a nice chair on the other side to help us down. How kind.Throughout the whole place these helping chairs were everywhere so we didnt even have to use the trusty hammer we brought with us-just in case….not that im a criminal lol. / The place is massive and was shut down 13 years ago for reasons you dont need me to tell you. So, to say the least me and my brother were a little nervous…mainly me. But alot more confident than when visiting the asylum or hospital. btw, i did not take my brother to those…i took a friend in my photography class who i didnt think realised i was serious about breakin into an asylum.Anyway, We took torches as some of the rooms and corridors were so dark. My brother seemed to think he was in the police or something after the capture of someone, looking through all the cupboards and wardrobes to ‘catch someone’. We didnt catch or find anyone, but we did find some very creepy places. I have seen WAY too many horror films based in derelict places to stay calm in places like this. As i rule i have to take my tripod, even in really light situations as i dont think id get ANY good shots from my hands shaking. There were three floors and 4 staircasesalong the building. We’d been walign aroudn for a while when we smelt this really weird smell…that i can only describe as making you feel bad. That doesnt make sense i realise, but thats what it was. We moved quickly past that part. After taking pictures down a dark corridor for 10 minutes i got really dizzy, at first i got all supernatural thinking, but im sure it was the fact that there was no air in the building, all windows and doors are covered sair tight, with a few small holes in the top levels, so no wonder i felt dizzy.We found a whole bunch of school desks and tables, and teachers rooms, dorms, stages, gym halls and everything you’d expect to see in a boys school.It was really weird imagining how it was and im trying to get in contact with a student from the home as i think that would be really interesting to put with these pictures, how he saw it, and how it is now. / Anyway, im sure im kept you long enough so il cut it short now. My brother found a whole bunch of keys to the building and i stole one of the door handles to add to my collection(having stole from asylums elsewhere) Next on my list, is the mental home next door. we attempted it on the way out, but thought we were pushing our luck not to get caught anyway! first time i havent been caught too. achievement. Me and my brother walked down the path and turned the corner only to see the security walking the block to do the check. close.

    (A few people have bubblemailed me asking about some of the sites i have visited, so im going to try and get some writeups done for the past sites i have visited, and will get them done for future sites as i go there, so on to the first without further ado, which is High Royds: ) High Royds was built in 1888 just outside of Bradford in the county of West Yorkshire in the UK. It was one of the many echelon style asylums, which means the wards were designed in an arrow shape, as opposed to the more popular pavilion style asylums where the wards were tightly clustered around each other. High Royds was one of the last remaining asylums that also used the shared open wards not found in today’s modern mental health facilities, which now opt for a more private system of wards comprising of individual rooms for each patient. Built to almost be a village in its own right, the idea was that High Royds would be capable of catering to all the needs of the staff and residents without them having to venture too far into the world outside. To this end High Royds was given better amenities than some villages we see today, boasting its own train station for the delivery of goods and supplies and a raft of shops and services including a library, a pharmacist, sweetshop, a butcher, a baker, but sadly not a candle stick maker. The site even came complete with its own tailors, upholstery and cobblers for the making and repair of clothes, furniture and shoes. The asylum closed in 2003 due to budget cutbacks, but has seen plenty of activity since then. As the setting for both the movie ‘Asylum’ and the TV series ‘No Angels And Bodies’ it has seen its fair share of screen time, and now is proving just as popular on the small screen of a digital camera, having become a very popular site for the UK Urban Exploration culture. It is entirely understandable why this would be the case, decorated throughout most of the site in ornately decorative floor and wall tiles the explorer is treated to wonderful vistas round every corner they turn. Sadly a lot of the buildings are now succumbing to moisture damage from holes in the roofing and pipe work being stolen for scrap value, but what does remain is as beautiful as ever. Sadly a large proportion of the site no longer remains, having been destroyed or converted to make way for the identically named High Royds village, a new development of luxury apartments and homes set within the grounds of the old asylum, and sometimes even using the actual walls and buildings of the old structure. No doubt the rest of it will follow suit, and the site is very much secured of late to ensure that no one gets in while the rest of the work carries on, but High Royds for the time being at least sports one of the most photogenic morgues and admin blocks that I have ever seen in an asylum so far. A school which overlooks High Royds was where members of the UK band Kaiser Chiefs spent some of their formative years, and thus High Royds became the title and partial subject matter for their song “HighRoyds” – the first verse of which goes: I remember nights out when we were young / They weren’t very good they were rubbish / Running round Highroyds isn’t fun / Just teenagers testing their courage I would contend that running around the place is fun, you just have to have a certain frame of mind and a camera to document it with!     / The fog was as thick as I had ever seen. visibility was down to only a few yards. I approached the area that the amazing old structure had stood waiting, anticipating, wanting it to emerge from the fog so badly. Only when I stood where the brick arches had previously captivated me did I realize that it had been dispensed of. The once spectacular old foundry was now just two large cylinders….to my dismay. This foundry was easily one hundred years old and was a spectacular place to shoot. I had made only two trips last summer and finally got back out to enjoy it again to find it had been demolished. This is the first time one of my favorite abandonments has been torn down and it was really difficult. The reality of it is that I will no doubt see many of the abandoned industry I enjoy in ruin within the next few years. What once was. / While I do like this shot, I feel I never quite did this place photographic justice. / Never again will I enjoy a rooftop view from this tired structure, for it has been put to rest. / The sun will still shine where this once stood, but it will no longer shed light on a piece of industrial histoty.

    Today, I decided to visit Bangour Hospital. I thought it would be an abandoned hospital with a few outbuildings….but I was verrrrry wrong! The hospital itself has been demolished, but the village is still there. It is huge, a whole village abandoned! There must be over 20 buildings abandoned including the nurses accomodation, clinics, shops, admin, fire and safety offices, and even a church! The amazing thing is, despite being abandoned for so many years, the place is still in fairly good condition and some of it is even powered still, I got the fright of my life when i pressed the light switch and the whole room lit up!! I only managed to get into one of the buildings, but i have plans to go back at some point to investigate some more. Oh, and I nearly forgot….any film buffs reading this, they used some of the buildings here for exterior shots for the film “The Jacket” with George Clooney!

    Oh WOW is all I can say that place is very beautiful and holds a lot of untold history, Thank you to Mark, John, Caroline G and Caroline (shanghaiwu) (I hope I spelt that right) for coming along. I loved the whole experience, and can not wait to get more information from Jward and read through it. For those of you who don’t know Aradale, here is a little run down. Aradale Asylum was built in 1863 and opened in 1867, Aradale was closed in 1993. As like most other buildings built in this era the design was European. Aradale was built for and housed the “insane”, being a term loosely used for anyone who suffered any form of malaise, depression, uncertainty of life and also very sadly, the mentally disabled or as was once known “retarded”. Back in the 1800’s we must remember that there was no diagnosis for depression and also the now known illnesses of bi-polar, schizophrenia, borderline personality and so on. There were also no drugs to treat any type of mental illness and often the doctors and nurses would resort to very strange treatments which are now considered (and rightly so) barbaric. With a 85% mortality rate Aradale was known as the place to go and die. Common treatments applied were the use of the now out-dated Lobotomy operation and also ECT (electro convulsive therapy). No doubt in the later years insulin induced coma therapy would have also been applied as has been reported in many psychicatric institutions within Victoria. These treatments are well reported to be nothing less than destructive. Since the closure of Aradale, NMIT has taken over the ownership and currently use the land and a few smaller buildings for a lavendar farm, and the police use the land for training. At one stage they did want to turn this beautiful building into a full resort with golf course and more but it fell through. It is a shame to see such a stunning building go into such a state of disrepair, the history all gone and not one thing left to show us all just how lucky we are today.     One of my favorite hobbies is Urban Exploration (aka: Urbex, UE). For those of you who aren’t familiar with UE, basically it entails discovering and entering the abandoned, unseen or off-limits places in our cities and towns. I mainly focus on abandonments…houses, schools, factories, etc. Of course this little hobby of mine goes hand in hand with photography, I love capturing these derelict spaces. I’ve never posted any of the results on RB as they really don’t fit in the style with the rest of my portfolio and mainly I do it jut for fun, not with a goal to create commercially viable photographs. But, I thought why not post some of the pictures in my journal, maybe some of you out there will enjoy them! Here are a few shots from the ruins of an old used furniture store being reclaimed by nature: Next is an abandoned citrus factory, one of my favorite discoveries. Be sure to check out the dates on the papers in these next few images, incredible! Ok, that’s a lot of photos for one journal, so I’ll leave it off here. Perhaps I’ll post another journal with more locations in the future :) Hope you enjoyed your glimpse into my little hobby.

    There’s an application on Facebook called Photo Competition. It’s actually how I heard about Redbubble months ago. I really enjoyed the fun atmosphere. (psst… notice the past tense). A topic for a competition came up, it was “Abandoned.” So I entered my Neglected Teddy picture. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the story of the bear, please check it out in my portfolio. It wasn’t staged. I came home from school to find this bear, which I took a picture of. It’s the same picture you see there, but I did bump the contrast up a smidgen and turned it black and white with a slight sepia tone. I have been on this Photo Competition application for about 6 months. I enter usually one competition a week, sometimes a couple more depending on if I have something to enter. I have never placed higher than 8th. Until now. I came in 3rd in the Abandoned topic with “Neglected Teddy.” In this application the top 3 get featured in the Hall of Fame section. I was very happy. I didn’t think I’d do that well and I was very glad people thought 1) my entry fit the topic and 2) that it was good enough to come in 3rd. I came in 3rd to two very very talented (and at least 1 professional) photographers. Then I read the discussion board. Why? I don’t know. I have avoided that thing like the plague because people I have noticed the postings have been increasingly negative. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some very helpful, supportive people on there, but you do get the people who are either mad their photo didn’t receive any comments or votes and they want everyone to know what entry is theirs so they can go vote/comment (which defeats the purpose of the entries being annonymus if you ask me). Or they’re complaining that people are being “too harsh” with their comments. Or in my case…. People think the photo that came in 3rd (mine) was deserving of it. Rude. I mean, that’s fine if they think that but is it necessary to publicize that? How would that make other people feel if they were told that FINALLY they had a hall of fame winner, but it doesn’t deserve it? I’m about to can that application. It’s too much of a headache. It really hurt me today that people just can’t be happy for other people. I’m happy for everyone who wind up making it into the Hall of Fame. People who make it there all deserve it. They’re voted on by their peers and they all are FANTASTIC shots. Why is it that now that it’s my turn to be one of those fantastic shots, I have people shooting it down? Oh, and one of the big reasons why they think it was undeserving was because it seems staged. Okay. It’s photography. Yes I lined up my shot and tried to make it look good. I guess that’s a bad thing?

    the news paper did not have this right / here is the true story , being a animal rescuer / on the puppy found out side a groomers but the vet office is next door If you heard the news over the holiday weekend, you know there was an abandoned 10-week old Malamute pup left at the Mountaineer Pet Care Center on the Greenbag Road. It’s where my Pommies and all my cats are groomed. I know those folks well. / / The above link shows photos of the pup (graphic, so view with caution). / / The newspaper and TV did a fluff-job on the story. The dog was not carefully and lovingly left at a vet’s location, as was reported. Instead, it was hurled out of a moving car, knotted in a bloody blanket, left by a dumpster…25 feet from a busy road in town….in 30 degree temperatures. The whole incident was captured on video. It took less than 2 minutes. A description of the car (but no tag) was captured by video. / / When folks at the groomer’s found him, they thought he had mange. The sheriff was called, as was the dog warden. The dog warden instructed the sheriff to shoot the dog, however the sheriff refused. Instead, there’s now animal cruelty charges pending for whomever is responsible for abandoning the dog. Many folks in Morgantown have contributed to a reward to help catch the “bad guy” (or girl). I think $$ might better be spent donating to Dr. Minger and Dorothy Traister who are absorbing all the costs for treating and caring for this dog. / / The dog (still unnamed) has severe malnutrition. The dog has almost no hair, and is missing skin, too. This is likely the result of a) exposure to elements – meaning it was probably an “outside dog” and b) skin infections. The dog has so many seeping wounds, it’s tough to keep him medicated with external salve. The dog is going to make it…he’s rambunctious and happy to have food and people who are taking care of him. / / If you’re interested in helping me help them, I’ll accept your donations in any amount. I’ll drop the $$ to Dorothy on my way to get Sparky a stocking stuffer (he loves his spa treatments). Also, if you have an interesting name for the dog, I’ll pass that on to Dorothy, too.     Over this past summer I have been infatuated with a run down farmhouse. It’s condition left much to the imagination. The old farmhouse is about a 2 hour drive from my house and whenever the opportunity arose to photograph it… I came running. I had the opportunity to photograph it 3 times this summer. / / Every time I see the old house my imagination gets going. I took all these images before I knew of its history. / / Well I finally got some confirmation on its history. / / So here it is: / / Originally I thought the history of this house belonged to another house fairly close to this one…. but I was wrong. This old farmhouse used to house a family of 4. The husband had been away for some time (working) and when he had returned home he found his wife in bed with another. His wife ended up taking the children and leaving him. It wasn’t long after this that the husband when downstairs and shot & killed himself. The house had since been boarded up and left to the elements. It is in a very small community so no one wanted to live in the house after the tragic events. / / It is a very tragic story and it just got me thinking that so often we come across these finds and to us they are just great images that stir our imaginations but to some they are tragic memories. I wonder how many more of our shots hold a story. I will not return to this old homestead… somehow it just wouldn’t feel right, now that I know its sad story. / / Here are the images I took of the Farmhouse… / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

    Please help me pick out images that you/I would think my friend, Don, who owns this farm, would enjoy seeing. / He was born here and lived there til he graduated from high school and married his sweetheart. Each time I go back to this place, I fall more and more in love with it and it’s history. / When talking to him, you can hear the love in his voice…the memories he shares with me…the care that he still holds for this place. It was abandoned around 1972 due to a lack of water source. It was once a thriving apple orchard. Located on a route used by settlers and Indians along the Missouri River…it’s been in his family forever. / Now, all the place is in ruin, The buildings have almost all fallen down, there are pieces of old rusted farm machinery scattered about. However, he still uses this place to keep cows…........he’s an old traditionalist kind. He refuses to sell the property in pieces….rather, he’d prefer to keep it whole and taken care of by someone who loves the land and environment as strongly as he does. / This calendar I’m putting together…is of images I’ve taken in the few months I’ve hiked this property. Falling in love with it and feeling a depth of life that so few others would understand or begin to relate to.
