This was a concept shoot of a dancer, performing cabaret in my studio.

This is a veiw of the Ancient Theatre of Sabratha in Libya. Looking down upon the stage from the seating area really was an amazing feeling. I could feel the atmosphere that would have been there, and imagine all the Roman residents roaring at the talent that would have been on the stage! /
As I arrive for my daughter’s ballet recital, camera in hand, I am filled with joy and pride at my young 8 year old. She is growing up so fast and filled with such talent and confidence. I am 40 and don’t think I could ever be on stage in front of hundreds performing anything. Especially in tights. She is beautiful. Her hair is all in the perfect ballet bun surrounded by white flowers. Her costume is a flowing white mini-wedding dress. She looks like a princess. She’s been practicing for this for months. I find a seat and it isn’t a good one. I’m far in the back and off to the right. Flash photography is not permitted, so as the dancers prep and the crew sets the stage I am rapidly setting and testing my camera. I want good photos. For memories, for me, for Isabella. The lights go out and two tiny spotlights illuminate center stage. I’m excited. My skin covers with chills. As she enters the stage I watch her face. My camera remains in my lap. She is scanning the room through the darkness. I know what she’s doing. She’s trying to find me. Her tiny little flower covered head moves left to right, up and down rows, until our eyes meet. I give her a tiny little wave, she gives me one back. I blow her a kiss and give the thumbs-up. She nods and her shoulders are suddenly straighter. Her confidence is full. My little girl begins dancing for a smiling crowd. Toward the end of the performance two tiny little ballerinas perform together. Two little specs of white floating across the immense darkness. All eyes on them. I don’t have my telephoto lens with me, but I attempt a photo anyway. At the end of their dance they both face each other. As if mirror images. They can’t be more than maybe 3.5 feet tall. Two tiny little glowing fairies. Two tiny spotlights. One very large stage. One very wrong lens. I take the photo and continue watching. As all the dancers enter and curtsy at the end I find myself crying. Wishing I had as much confidence and talent as these young girls. I see Isabella. She’s holding hands with the line of dancers as they prepare for the final bow. She scans the room again. Nods at me. We both smile. I love this child of mine. She teaches me more about life every day than I think I could ever learn without her in it. I realize a lot of who she is comes from parenting. I’m proud of the way I am raising her and I love seeing the results. What I realized on this day is, she has helped me be a better parent too. Good parenting definitely brings good reward. She is my proof of that theory. She hugs me afterward and asks if she did ok. I told her she was beautiful and brilliant and it made me smile and cry all at once. She hugs me and says, “Aww Mom, I’m not a baby!” I hug her back and say, “You will always be my baby sweetheart.” Sometimes life and beauty is more clear from afar. This is the photo of the two tiny ballerinas kneeling on stage.
Co-production. Ted created the fractal design. I used the tools and filters of Photoshop to change the composition and bring out the colors more. Hope you like the endresult. This is a shot I took back in college of a friend of mine, Kevin Haliburton. As a photographer of the Panola College newspaper ‘The Pony Express,’ it was my assignment to take photos of him because of his involvement with a local Gilbert and Sullivan production. This was to be a feature in the next edition. The photo was felt to be so good that it was entered in a state wide competition for newspaper features, and it won third place in the state of Texas. I was over the moon. The lighting is coming from on stage as he and I were off stage. I remember the intense concentration on his face, ready for his cue to go on. The shot was only a pre shot and was never set up to be anything but messing around, but I guess I had the settings just right because the shot is fabulous I think. I can’t remember the settings, sorry. I wish I knew.
