Scarification is a means of permanently marking the skin by cutting alone, without the use of pigments. The scars may be lighter or darker than your original skin tone and may raise up (keloid scarring). There are many ways to produce a scar but the cut must always penetrate the dermis if a scar is to be produced. The result depends as much on your skin as the method used. Black skin in particular is very good at producing pronounced keloid scars and this is a popular alternative to tattooing for people with very dark skin, for whom a tattoo might not show up very well. In many parts of Africa these scars are marks of beauty and a way to identify someone belonging to a particular group. Scarification also may mark one’s status as a civilized being, adult, or member of a specific ethnic group or initiation association. The meaning of mandala comes from the Sanskrit word for both “CIRCLE” and “CENTRE” Even though it may be dominated by other geometric shapes like squares or triangles, a mandala will always remain a concentric (CIRCLE) structure. Mandalas offer balancing visual elements, symbolizing unity and harmony. The meanings of individual mandalas is usually different and unique to each mandala. For some, the goal of the mandala is to serve as a tool on one’s spiritual journey as it symbolizes cosmic and psychic order. For others, the mandala is used as a counter-balancing mechanism of one’s own psyche, (The spirit or soul) and a way for us to focus or meditate our way into becoming a whole person.
Last one of these, I promise! Also see Twirled and Twirled Again. (I’m real creative with names and stuff.) This time I kept seeing it as some undersea creature/plant, so I gave it a green tint. So I recently returned back to one of my favorite sites to photograph. This is the Whalehead Hunt Club in Currituck, North Carolina. Currituck Lighthouse is also visible on the left. This particular morning was just beautiful, very rare to have hardly any wind coming across Currituck Sound. The reflection turned out awesome, in my opinion. Image has been processed through Redynamix for the HDR look and also had the Orton effect applied. Best viewed in large. / Image made with tripod mounted Nikon D200, Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, remote shutter release.
