This was shot in an amazing house, it was caught in a time capsule….the property was recently sold and the furniture sold off too, this shoot is all that remains. I wanted to look back, not through the rose coloured glasses we usually gaze back with, but to look at the tension that lies just below the surface. The 50’s and early 60’s have this all to perfect image, surface image that is…

Jack and Jill by Karin Taylor / you are viewing the original creation created from a roll of brown kraft paper / i will subsequently load another couple of versions to RED Bubble soon… and they will also be available as prints, cards and a specially crafted one for tshirts will be here soon too Jack and Jill – The Creative Process a) tear large ‘rips’ of brown kraft paper from the roll / in a frenzy..helps also rid one of general frustrations of life / b) grab a huge paint brush / c) discover lid of gesso is sealed shut, requires a hammer to / remove lid / d) bash gesso lid repeatedly on desk / e) discover gesso has been flung all over the studio floor due to small holes / caused from bashing the gesso / f) clean studio floor prior to doing anything else, as gesso dries fast / g) relax …. dip paintbrush in gesso and slather it all over the brown paper / strips in long horizontal strokes… most therapeutic time of / process…mindless brushwork / h) let the paper dry….and start thinking…hmmm what will i draw? / i) come up with a brilliant idea…. / j) try to draw brilliant idea many times, resulting in lots of screwed up brown / paper and wasted gesso / k) finally come up with brilliant design, oh yes.!! “Jack n Jill” Brilliant idea…but / they’ve all but grown up whilst ‘in situ’ . Jack now sporting a divinely / devilish goatee and Jill always the dreamer, now sporting a resemblance / to the flower children of the sixties, a favourite era of mine…..This also / works rather well becoz aswe all know, after Jack fell down and broke his / crown, he fixed it up with vinegar and brown paper…since Jack is drawn on / brown paper, he won’t have to go too far for a plaster / l) trace over the briliant design with a black texta / m) colour in the brilliant design with whatever’s handy and stick stuff on when / drawing fails completely and you don’t know what else to do..also…when / all else seems to fail resort to those old gum rubbers with star and flower / stampings i made an aeon ago…yep…stamp, stamp, stamp.. works well! / n) to make the bucket…i had stuffed it up completely….so with nothing to lose / i poured ink on paper towel, then cut towel into bucket shape and / stamped it… / o) i used pastels and coloured faber castell pencils plus a heap of charcoal / and some acrylic paint in the mix…. a messy and fun process / p) play with it in photoshop!! a lot!!! / / Mounted Print / Jack and Jill at Twilight Prints and Cards

Yes, they are my feet and I’m relaxing on the beach watching the kids play in the water. I gave this image some texture and it reminds me of a very lazy, Aussie summer’s day at the beach.

Super Vixen is a tribute to the over the top, tongue in cheek, almost preposterous movie style of the infamous Russ Meyer. Set in a barren desert I love the bizarreness as much as the pure aesthetics of this montage. I want to engage the viewer into an almost surreal, dreamlike state.

the bluebird couple prepares to raise a second brood in the house, it takes two to raise a family. You might ask what is the male doing? Well, he is busy fending off a sparrow couple who wants the house as well.

This is a shot from a calendar series that I produced for about 12 years. It was called Men For All Seasons and featured AFL footballers. The idea was to present these guys so that they looked more like models than footballers as the calendar sold internationally. I felt that this pic had a very real look about it and perhaps a 60’s feel. Looking again maybe 70’s. Please also check out my www.leapoffaith.com.au and www.bodylinecal.com websites and if in Melbourne my creative workshops.

One of my shots showing my style during the 60’s. I have left the banner on in the hopes that this may be considered as a poster. Now it would hardly make a poster without some sort of blurb at the bottom would it!?

These are rather like broad tagliatelle and I prepared the dish like this… / Roast about 10 cherry tomatoes cut in half, in olive oil with 5 garlic cloves and a sprinkle of dried chili for twenty minutes. Halfway through the roasting, add some small whole mushrooms. I used oyster, buna-shimeji and shiro-shimeji varieties. Meanwhile bring some water to the boil, add salt and the pappardelle. After 5 minutes, add a handful of baby spinach leaves and cook for a further 6 minutes. / Serve the pasta with the roasted, tomatoes, garlic and mushrooms. / Total preparation and cooking time 25 minutes. Bon appetitto! The lighting was overcast daylight (the best diffusser) through my kitchen window. N.B. This image is now for sale as laminated kitchen art! Technical Details: Camera: Nikon D200 / Lens: 12-24mm f4 / Focal Length: 20mm / ISO: 250 / Exposure: 1/125 sec at f /4 / Post Processing: Photoshop CS3 © 2008 John Hooton

Taken in 1966, this is one of my favourite images of the 60’s of the iconic DJ, Sir Jimmy Savile OBE. I took the shot when I was 20 during my assistant days at 1:15 am, after a long advertising shoot for a petrol company with my boss, top fashion and advertising photographer John Cowan. I asked Sir Jim if I could run a couple of rolls of film for my portfolio. True gent that he is, Jim said “Sure!” even though every one was pretty tired after the 5 hour gasoline ad session. Anyhow, this is the result and it remains one of my favourite pictures to this day as it shows Sir Jim as he really was and is – a strong and generous human being who did not take himself too seriously. You are a true professional Jim, and I am eternally grateful to you for giving me this opportunity. Technical Details: Camera: Hasselblad 500C / Lens: 80mm Planar / Film: Tri-X / ASA: 400 rated at 200 / Exposure: 1/125 sec at f/16 / Lighting: 5,000 Joule Strobe in perspex light bank. © 1966 – 2008 John Hooton
