This is another shot that I took on the 5th of May as part of the 24 hours of flickr. It is the shot of Australias own (or better my own, since it is in my backyard) Hills Hoist that was prominently featured at the 200 Olympics Opening Ceremony. / And now I have to learn that it was not even an Australian Invention: Taken from Wikipedia: / “The Hills Hoist is an Australian version of the rotary clothes line, the distinguishing feature of which is a crown and pinion winding mechanism invented by Adelaide based Lance Hill in 1945. This allows this clothesline to be lowered and raised. The rotary clothes line itself had been invented as early as 1855, diagrams of which were published in Scientific American that year. This style of clothes line was popularised in Australia by Lance Hill and is a common sight in Australian and New Zealand backyards. It is considered one of Australia’s most recognisable icons, and is used frequently by artists as a metaphor for suburbia in Australia. For many post-war baby boomers it is a symbol of their childhood and an Australian national icon. / It is widely (and incorrectly) believed by the public to be an Australian invention. However, other Australian and American precursors existed decades before it was produced in 1945 in the Adelaide suburb of Glenunga by Lance Hill.” Please also visit my website alexkess.com and my photoblog . Our gorgeous simaese, Tolly, again. Along with his kidney problems he has quite bad arthritis which you can see here in his poor, little bent ankle. The way he positions his feet when standing remined me very much of a ballet dancer in 5th position.
OK; so I missed the 4th. But I haven’t seen many fireworks pics here on RB, so thought I’d just get this one in a day late… In fact, it’s a couple of years late. This was taken in the Algarve, Portugal (where else?) during one of their many reasons to throw a big party. I needed to get both sources in and my lens wasn’t wide enough… so as I do, I panned 2 shots and stitched ‘em together in PS. That was one amazing display over Carvoeiro beach, a small fishing village that is rapidly expanding but is still a charming reminder of what life was like down there before the EU bulldozed in. I was lucky to get that vantage point, in fact in the back yard of some Portuguese family who didn’t really understand what I was doing there with my tripod and sent their dog out to chase me away… silly thing just ended up humping my leg and went back inside to sleep it off. I seem to have that effect on dogs… go figure! This is for Candy cause I know what loud fireworks and thunderstorms do for her… and by the way Cathleen, are you finally happy I’ve pulled my stupid finger out? ps: Please try the large view!

Here is another shot that I took as part of the 24hrs of flckr. Looking straight down between my House and the fence. It is a bit of an attempt to turn something ordinary into something extraordinary and to give this mundane subject its 15 minutes of fame. Please also visit my website alexkess.com and my photoblog . collograph + watercolour Five is between 4 and 6 and is the third prime number, after 2 and 3, and before 7. Because it can be written as 2(21)+1, five is classified as a Fermat prime. 5 is the third Sophie Germain prime, the first safe prime, and the third Mersenne prime exponent. Five is the first Wilson prime and the third factorial prime, also an alternating factorial. It is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part and real part of the form 3n − 1. It is also the only number that is part of more than one pair of twin primes. Five is conjectured to be the only odd untouchable number and if this is the case then five will be the only odd prime number that is not the base of an aliquot tree. The number 5 is the 5th Fibonacci number, being 2 plus 3. 5 is also a Pell number and a Markov number, appearing in solutions to the Markov Diophantine equation: (1, 2, 5), (1, 5, 13), (2, 5, 29), (5, 13, 194), (5, 29, 433), ... (A030452 lists Markov numbers that appear in solutions where one of the other two terms is 5). Whereas 5 is unique in the Fibonacci sequence, in the Perrin sequence 5 is both the fifth and sixth Perrin numbers. / (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5_%28number%29)

knowing your intense and passionate love for classical / music Kilian….and your “potential” for the love of abstracts / I have decided to create this spectacular visual abstract of / Beethoven’s ENTIRE 5th Symphony…encapsulating not only / it’s POWER and GRANDEUR, but also it’s incredible / INNER HARMONY and TONALITY I am sure that this will win your heart over to other more / esoteric abstracts in future …and can even now hear you / humming those powerful opening notes…da..da. da dah / and tapping your toes with glee as you view this!!! The added bonus of viewing these Symphonies in this unique / audio/visual format is, of course, that (in this day and age / where time is money) you can now “view/hear” the entire / symphony in a matter of seconds rather than having to / spend forty minutes or more of your precious time trying to / listen to a scratchy recording of it!! Enjoy my friend!!! / Next…onward… to Mozart!!!
Bonfire Night We used to chant this a children, not really knowing the reason:) Remember, remember the fifth of November / Gunpowder, treason and plot. / I see no reason why gunpowder treason / Should ever be forgot. / Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, / ‘Twas his intent / To blow up the King and the Parliament. These fireworks were captured with Nikon D700 on Streatham Common. I used a tripod and my Nikor 24-120mm Lense.
Here is another shot that I took as part of the 24hrs of filckr. This was taken just outside our front door on the opposite side of the road. It looks like the Possum is gazing at the moon. A little bit of PS on this one to make the moon more intense. Please also visit my website alexkess.com and my photoblog . Cheers and Thanks, Alex

As part of the 24hrs of flckr yesterday I went on a photo-rampage. With all my cameras firing. D200, Finepix Z1 and Nikon FM2 (2 rolls of film). Then I realized I can only post 1 photo. I’ll have to wait to see which one is the best until the 2 rolls are developped. I’ll also post all other shots over the coming weeks. Let me know if you have a favourite or 1 that you think is particularly suitable for the 24hrs of Flickr Pool. This is a 7xp HDR with the D200of our Street. This crazy Flare thing happened again. I love it! Thijs time I actually tried to replicate the effect of the first one and it worked. I wonder if other people using the Sigma 10 – 20 mm Lens have got similar expiriences. It works particularly well if the lightsource (the sun) is covered up a little. Please also visit my website alexkess.com and my photoblog . Cheers and Thanks, Alex
