A shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. Unfortunately a computer virus is giving me hell at the moment and it was re-imaged a few days ago and I’m waiting until next Monday to get CS4 installed so until then it’s jpeg’s straight from the camera (I’ll process the RAW’s next week). Yes it was an amazing night. I took a few of this exact shot at ISO 100 bracketed with long exposures but after these shots a bird flew into the frame and I grabbed 4 more as it flew across at 1600 ISO and very shallow depth of field but these turned out to be my fav’s (best viewed large to see the birdy).Only wish I remembered to take my old film camera to take a few Velvia shots to compare, but I forgot. I left after putting the kids to bed and at the time the light wasn’t looking in any way like it would shape up to anything special… Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70 f/2.8 USM @ 42mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 1600 / Shutter Speed: 1/250thsec / Aperture: f/2.8 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: -1/3rd / Post production: none For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society
Took this shot of a juvenile Pacific Gull (Larus pacificus) at Red Bluff last week on a family holiday at Lake Tyers. Another shot that demonstrates the liberating power of my new 5DmkII as this sort of pic was difficult and expensive (on motor drive) for me to take with my old landscape optimized Velvia50 film set up. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM @ 300mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 200? / Shutter Speed: 1/250thsec / Aperture: f/13 / WB: Auto / Post production: jpeg, straightened, cropped and levels in Microsoft Office Picture Manager (yuk, I’ll redo it properly next week from the RAW in PS) Check out my Birds gallery for more avian delights. Another shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. The light was amazing and now that I’m shooting digital I was experimenting more with filters and bracketing with my fav being this stop under with a full length 3 stop neutral density graduated filter. Now that I’ve shot a few frames to be honest I’m not seeing digital as a step up colour wise compared to my old Velvia shots with these sort of sunset shots (outside of the orange sunset it seems a bit colourless and grey too me). For waterfall, low light and wildlife it leaves Velvia for dead but I think Velvia will still have a place in my arsenal in certain situations. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70 f/2.8 USM @ 27mm / Filter: Cokin 121F, 3 stop full length neutral density graduated filter / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 1.3sec / Aperture: f/22 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: -1 stop / Post production: none For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society
Another shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. This was my first sunset with the new toy and I had fun experimenting a bit more with my neutral density graduated filters to compare results. I shot the scene with 2 & 3 stop ND grads to see how they compared my fav being this 2 stop ND grad. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70 f/2.8 USM @ 24mm / Filter: Cokin 121M, 2 stop neutral density graduated filter / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 0.6sec / Aperture: f/16 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: none For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society
Over the Australia Day weekend I went sea kayaking with three of my mates down at Wilsons Promontory. This was our second sea kayak trip the first one being a slightly terrifying introduction when we ignorantly charged out through a big surf into a huge swell and found that we needed to face straight into it to avoid tipping over. We quickly decided the safest thing to do was to head straight out to an island 8km away. After three of the most strenuous and uneasy hours of my life we finally made it into the lee of this rarely visited island. For this trip the idea was to do something far more conservative in the more sheltered Corner Inlet at the Prom. Unfortunately once again the weather was against us the weather report stating: “Sat 24/1/09 / Morning – Hazardous Conditions. Use Extreme Caution Very windy with large choppy seas. Small craft advisory. Moderate short period waves. / Winds: W 22 – 30 knots / Seas: WSW 8 feet at 6 sec.” Fully aware of these facts we set off anyway hoping for the best. Needless to say it was a very exciting trip and we covered the 12 km in under two hours being carried quickly by the combined forces of tide, wind and swell stopping in the lee of Granite Island for a break 3km from shore. We continued to Freshwater Cove for a late lunch then continued around White Dog Point and Entrance Point and down the coast towards Rabbit Island. Unfortunately by this late hour the tide had turned against us and we struggled against it for an hour next to Hunter Point making virtually no progress. Defeated we headed into shore and set up camp. The hour was late and as you can see the beach was exceptionally wide. Despite the beautiful light, amazing location and sand patterns I only managed to grab three hand held grab shots as I walked back across the beach between ferrying our heavy fully laden boats above the high tide mark before we set up camp and prepared dinner. These grab shots were some of my favorites of the trip. Out of interest the days high winds were integral to making this shot there being no other way of blowing that much dry sand from further up the beach onto the recently exposed wet sand. Rabbit Island is just visible on the horizon. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF16-35 f/2.8L II USM @ 16mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 1/40th sec / Aperture: f/16 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: minus 1/3rd stop / Post Capture: Levels in PS For more shots from this area check out my Wilsons Promontory gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society : http://www.redbubble.com/people/traviseaston/art/2470228-2-sunset-tin-mine-cove
Took this on my Australia Day 2009 weekend sea kayak trip around the Prom on our first morning. This was one of those cloudless and very intense summer mornings when the sun just catapulted up above that horizon becoming too intense and bright for good images almost instantly. This particular spot is away from any designated walking routes so is no doubt experienced only very rarely. I got up before dawn and before any of my buddies were even thinking of saying hello to the new day. So I got this beautiful sight all to myself and additionally didn’t have the worry of unthinking friends stomping their footprints straight through the middle of my compositions like happened the previous day. It’s funny I just walk around beaches very carefully these days totally aware of the impact my footfalls will have on any composition but of course this is not normal with others oblivious to such aesthetic considerations. The great looking lichens on the foreground rock were certainly a big bonus. Took a few of this one and the only way I could get any colour in the sky was to piggy back a 2 and 3 stop neutral density graduated filter (i.e. 5 stops) and then I had to make sure I placed them perfectly so I didn’t darken the headland (close but not perfect, good filter use is invisible and I haven’t quite succeeded in that here, I think I prefer winter sunrises). Fortunately my test shots were done pre-sunrise so I was all set up when the moment came. Amazing how much jiggery pokery it takes to get something to look the same as you see it. One of my companions had hiked the north end of the Prom years before, walking almost 60km in stifling heat on inland viewless tracks in two days with very heavy packs, there destination Lighthouse Point. When they got there he was bitterly disappointed to see a small light on a stick atop a short metal framed tower and not the impressive round stone building they had envisaged. I think Russ enjoyed this trip much better certainly gave us a good laugh to reminisce about his younger gung-ho hiking days. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF24-70 f/2.8L USM @ 30mm / Filter: Cokin P121M 2 stop ND Grad and P121S 3 stop ND grad / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 0.8 sec / Aperture: f/16 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: minus 1/3rd stop / Post Capture: Levels, hue saturation, dodging & sharpening in PS4 For more shots from this area check out my Wilsons Promontory gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

Took this at 7:40pm tonight … in the dark .. love the ‘modeling’ lamps on the MT-24EX. I’m happy with the diffused light now.
