Happy New Year everyone! This shot was taken at the Sunshine Coast just before Christmas 2007….well it’s an old shot isn’t it. Taken with my Canon 5D and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens. No Filter has been used but I did some fake HDR processing (single shot) using Dynamic Photo HDR. It’s a fun program and a great alternative to Photomatix.
The SS Dicky was washed ashore onto Dicky Beach in 1893 during a cyclone. It was re-floated, but again, heavy seas turned the ship about and back onto the sand where it remains to this day. / / The suburb and beach was named after the ship. The beach is an unspoilt stretch of sun-drenched sand, on Queensland’s magnificent Sunshine Coast. Taken with my 5D and 16-35mm lens and I was so lucky to have a nature spectacle as the fog rolled in from West creating a mystic ambience I have also written a photographers guide if you are interested in knowing more about this site

Still going through my images from my Sydney trip this year . Went down to the Sydney Opera House a couple of times as it was close to where we were staying in the CBD and The Sydney skyline and Opera House would have to be one of my favourite skylines to photography besides the Perth skyline . Would have to be one of my favourite cities in Australia as well , If i did’nt live in Perth could easly live in either Sydney or the Gold Coast . This was a 3 image vertical stitch . http://kirkhille.wordpress.com/ Various images of mine are for sale on various finishes and sizes from Gloss and lustre, Metallic and Fuji Flex prints. My first real attempt at some star trails, I thought the South Celestial Pole would be a bit further up in the image but it ended up being just out but I think I still like this one. This tree is the same tree in my image Speed of Light. This technique will definitely require some more practice, the tree is lit from car headlights coming off Lysterfield Road in the distance. Borrowed mum’s new/old Canon 5D for this one with a 24-70mm f2.8 L series attached. / Settings Canon 5D, 24-70mm f2.8 L USM. FL: 54 mm 30 seconds @ f2.8×50 shots, ISO 800 No Filters Adobe Lightroom 2, Startrails software & Adobe Photoshop CS4

Went on a little stroll around the city today to shoot a couple of laneways with Flamegirl for Laneway Magazine who requested some shots of this little spot. This is the same lane as shot in my Hosier Lane but up the other end facing the other way :D I’ve been using HDR sparingly lately but it helps to bring out so much character in these laneways that I simply can’t resist. This is also one of my first goes experimenting with the square format too! / Settings Canon 5D, 17-40mm f4 L USM. FL: 17 mm 1/160th of a second @ f4 (Multiple Exposures), ISO 800 No Filters Adobe Lightroom 2, HDR in Photomatix Pro & Stitched together in Adobe Photoshop CS4 Click here for my other images of laneways and graffiti Click here for my other images of Melbourne
Whilst standing up here this evening I had to ask myself.. is this the safe thing to do? But then I thought, if we never took risks then that would be a boring way to live. This one was taken from the same spot as a couple of my other Portsea images but at a different time and day. My original intention was to get a good sunset around the eastern side of the London Bridge but the tide was a lot higher than I expected so I climbed back up to this spot instead and it was definitely worth it :) I had to put the ISO up a fair bit to keep the exposure time down as it was almost dark. Luckily I can get away with it with this camera, the picture would be a lot grainier had I used my 40D. The London Bridge is located on the ocean side of Portsea in the Mornington Peninsula National Park, Victoria, Australia. It’s only a short walk down to this spot from the car park. / Settings Canon 5D, 17-40mm f4 L USM. Canon 5D Mark II / Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L Zoom Lens with Hoya HMC ND x400 Filter / Focal length: 24mm / ISO: 50 / Aperture: f9 / Speed: 370 seconds / Focus: Manual / Image: Single RAW file, shot in Monochrome / Location: Britannia Falls, Valley of the Waters Creek, Blue Mountains National Park, May 2009
The first time I visited the mid section of Katoomba Falls I flunked the composition. Second time round I broke a few land-based rules to get the right position. With such depth to capture, as opposed to the “front-on” angle, or even side-on, I find a long exposure, in this case 100 seconds, fills that depth with body. Seeping the light with a 9-stop ND filter, like dripping treacle off a spoon. Or something poetic like that. Canon 5D Mark II, shot in Monochrome. Blue Mountains National Park.
