Got really lucky on this shot, goofing around with my macro lens when i saw this Great Blue Heron some distance away. Quick change to the Sigma 50-500mm lens netted this. HDR Images / Prague Images / Aviation Related Images
D-Day simulation, soldiers disembarking the relative security of their Landing Craft to storm the beach at D-Day, only to come under heavy machine gun, mortar and artillery fire. Just imaging for a minute what those guys went through !!!
Macro lens? Nope, this was taken with my Nikon D200, Sigma 50-500mm and a 1.4 Teleconverter, manual focus and handheld. How do you like them apples?
Caught this moment while taking some sunset photos. This Great Blue Heron just landed on the old pier, I loved the sihoulette cast against the evening sky.
I love mornings like these. Heavy ground fog is hanging in the air, the sun is beginning to break through and I know I’m in store for a beautiful day. The screendoor is open, I can smell the fresh brewed coffee and can faintly hear the bacon sizzling in the pan. My dogs are watching me head up towards the road, lugging the D200 and the 50-500mm lens that almost always seems to be attached. Wonder what they must be thinking: “Here goes daddy again, pointing that thing that makes that funny noise at things …”. Indeed, “daddy” is stalking some starlings that are sitting on a wire, dew from the fog collecting and dripping from it. Nice touch for the one starling to put on a little airshow as well. Only one thing is missing.
F-15E Strike Eagle from the East Coast Demo team performs a highspeed pass to wow the spectators at the Airpower Over Hampton Roads airshow in Langley, Virginia.
Captured this moment while trying to get the evening’s last shots near a covered bridge in Pennsylvania. The setting sun and clouds just made for a nice moment. Image is “As Is”, totally unmodified, taken with Nikon D300 and Sigma 50-500mm lens.
Today I had my first close encounter with snow geese, who appear to have migrated here for the winter. What a sight to see. The noise as they are in flight is just incredible! It appears to be advantageous to be on top during these close flights ….. notice the one “leaking” some hydraulic fluid? After months of travelling from the Grand Canyon to Virginia, Herman finally settled down and got in touch with his Financial Advisor Chris Fratzenfritzer to receive his quartely portfolio update. They met for lunch at the upscale Ugly Duckling, known for their splendid “All You Care To Eat” lunch buffet. Local authorities put together a quick press conference, reporting eye witness accounts of other guests and revealing the restaurants security camera footage: / “On January 8th, Chris Fratzenfritzer and Herman were seen entering the establishment, and immediatley settled down at the buffet. After approximately 15 minutes, fellow patrons overheard a heated argument coming from the buffet line. Eye witness accounts revealed that Herman picked up his portfolio and allegedly threw it at Chris. After the feathers settled, Chris was seen pounding his fist, upon which fellow patrons reported hearing a faint scream of “Bernard Madoff?” coming from Herman, just before he plunged into the abyss. The condition or whereabouts of Herman at this time is unknown. We will now answer any question you may have.” As you may know, he’s been spotted here: (click on image for more info) / / and here …. drinking beer / / and of course here, in Oatman Arizona: / / Let’s not forget the Grand Canyon sighting: / / bothering German tourists …. / / seeking shelter here: / / and going for a swim …. /
Captured in four-wheel drive country, in pursuit of the Wild Horses that roam freely in Northern Corova. The grasses gently blowing in the oceans’ breeze just begged to be photographed. Taken with the Nikon D300 and the Sigma 50-500mm (since I was hunting for horses).
Amazing how much fun little “props” can be while at the beach waiting for the sun to rise. Taken with D300 and Sigma 50-500mm.
Last night I went to the Airpower Over Hampton Roads Airshow. I stopped near a parking lot at the end of the runway, and was treated to the return of four F-15E Strike Eagle pilots. As they walked towards us, they asked us how they looked and if their 4 ship formation was nice and tight. They then joked that this pictured pilot here, was probably way off the mark, I even commented that I didn’t get his plane in even with THAT lens. It was fun to see the human aspect of an airshow, and having a laugh with these hometown heros. I can’t believe how young these “kids” looked.
F-15E Stike Eagle performing rolling into a knife edge pass with afterburners lit. Captured at Airpower Over Hampton Roads, Langley AFB. Image made with Nikon D300, Sigma 50-500mm. Image is “As Is”, straight out of the camera. / f/6.3 / 1/1250s / 500mm
09:37 Sunday morning. The static display of the F-22 Raptor is just screaming to be photographed. Decided to break a few rules here and only took a shot of the F-22’s office. What an incredible plane! The flight demo later on was just stunning as usual. Taken at the 2009 Airpower Over Hampton Roads Airshow at Langley Air Force Base, VA. I just love the lighting in this shot.
Green Heron falling easy prey to the Sigma 50-500mm, after he landed literally 10 yards away from me. Got images of him catching three fish and a dragonfly. I have been stalking this guy for over a year now, finally got a few keepers. Taken with Nikon D300 and Sigma 50-500mm.
Sort of a bittersweet moment, apparently the West Coast Demo team will no longer perform at airshows with the F-15. To mark the “retirement” this F-15 was hosed down by two firetrucks as it returned from it’s last tactical flight demo. Nikon D300, Sigma 50-500mm.
Caught this little treefrog while at the Botanical Gardens to see what the fledging bald eagles are up to. They have not started branching yet, so this little guy kept me occupied for a bit.

British troops just completed occupying the Virgina City of Williamsburg. There is no telling what horror these young eyes must have seen …. HDR Image created from one single RAW image using ReDynaMix, dodge & burnt in Photoshop CS3. Taken with Nikon D300 and Sigma 50-500mm
Ok, is it just me or is this just incredible? This was taken during the 2009 Harborfest in Norfolk, VA, captured here is some of the rigging of the Brazilian Navy vessel “Cisne Branco” (White Swan) which hails from Rio de Janeiro. Can you imagine maintaining this clutter of ropes and lines? Do they have unique names for identifying each line and their function? Best viewed in Large. Taken with Nikon D300 and Sigma 50-500mm lens.
Captured at the 2009 Harborfest in Norfolk, VA. This was taken during an underwater dive demo, the crew of the Salvageship Cromo, demonstrated the techniques of cutting steel underwater while wearing an antique but 100% functional dive suit and helmet. Best viewed in LARGE for sure!
Saw this old and tired Mack B-42 truck in a rock quarry near Mifflinburg, PA, while stalking the Amish. It just screamed: “HDR me, PLEASE HDR me.” Wish has been granted …. Single RAW image, converted to HDR in ReDynamix, then Dodged&Burnt in CS3, then ran through Digital Lightroom to adjust various colors. Taken with Nikon D300 and Sigma 50-500mm lens.
2009 NAS Oceana Airshow. Despite the overall lousy weather, I managed to get a few keepers. Here is a nice vapor burst around the 30yr Anniversary Marine F/A-18 Hornet.
