Sunrise – ANZAC Day 2008 McLaren Vale, South Australia —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / The Battle of Lone Pine, which took place during the Gallipoli campaign, was the only successful Australian attack against the Turkish trenches within the original perimeter of the ANZAC battlefield, and yet it was merely a diversion to draw attention from the main assaults of 6 August against the Sari Bair peaks of Chunuk Bair and Hill 971. Another oldie but a goldie from my Tasmania holiday in 2004. I have used the same processing as the other (recent) 2004 photo rebirthing. / It appears that this technique only looks good on those with a lot of mist and with high contrast in the foreground, so that the sepia doesn’t hide too much detail, and Painter has lots of edges to work with.

9-Apr-2009 2pm / 1/60, f/8, ISO-400 / Sigma 150mm @ 3m to subject / Hand held (no flash). Hacking River / Royal National Park / Sutherland, NSW No wind and no waves. Complete silence. One of those special moments when time stands still and everything comes into perfect focus. [ps: just at the moment I took this, my flashgun failed to prep. I have no idea how I managed everything in focus at 1/60 secs with a telephoto. (I’ve checked the EXIF). It was like I was in the zone with this one.]
A Red Velvet Mite and youngster in tow, down in the mud, / somewhere in Cumberland Forest, NSW. Canon EOS 40D / Sigma 150mm + 50mm tube (1.85:1) / [M] 1/80, f/11, ISO-400. flash (at least) 1:1 on original 3888×2592 frame. 2919×1946 @ 240dpi (cropped for effect) ps: in the immature stage, Red Velvet Mites are known to be parasitic, though I would hope that this one is just getting a lift on mum’s back. All thanks to CapturedByKylie Chief Spider Poker and Mite Spotter, without whom this mumma mite and bubba mite would have gone about their shopping largely undisturbed.

...this poppy has a secret…
A big scary spider putting on a show of strength after copious poking with a twig to get it to come out and pose for me. Canon 40D / Canon MP-E 65mm @3x + 1.4x tc / Ringflash / Manual: 1/320sec, f/14, ISO-400 / Finished in Lightroom. Green Ave, Ryde, NSW
I won’t tell you all the sordid details of what I had to do to get this spider to play ball. Talk about intransigent! Location: Llewellyn St, Rhodes, NSW

Canon 5D2 + MPE @ 4-5x / F/11, ISO-800, 1/200sec + Ringflash Waterfall Cottage / Cabbage Tree Rd, Bayview, NSW / (Open Garden Scheme (NSW)) This is another very tiny jumping spider, though a most peculiar one that tries hard to look (a bit (see below)) like an ant, and perhaps even feeds on ants, and therefore needs extra long fangs to get beyond the reach of its favorite prey’s formidable front pincers. Processed in Lightroom and Photoshop. / High-pass Sharpening / Linear Light Blend and selective blurring out of sharpening artifacts. / Finished in Lightroom with Tone Curve high contrast adjustment and reduce green saturation. Unlike my regular star at the crematorium (see “here Spike!”), I didn’t want to get too close and personal with this little guy because I was wary of leeches. I’d already been preyed on by one earlier the same day (same garden, at the top pond) when I took the photo ‘crazy eyes’. This garden was a humid rainforest style landscape perched on the side of a steep hill and overshadowed by tall established trees. Every inch of it was alive with insects, spiders, birds and lizards. If per chance you ever visit this garden and have a ritual of sitting down to take photos, tuck your jeans into your socks – trust me – just do it – you’ll be glad you did. See below additional snapshots of this little critter and blowups of its highlights.
My usual place, probably the same leaf, but a different spider each time. Northern Suburbs Crematorium and Memorial Gardens. (on the cusp of Chatswood / Ryde) NSW Canon 5D2 + MPE @ 5x / f/16, 1/200sec, ISO 1600 + ringflash 5171×3580 pixels @ 240dpi (cropped) After an initial hounding to move this little guy from the centre of the rose bush out to an accessible edge, perhaps it was due to my strong personality (or maybe the huge and dangerous looking lens I was holding) that this dude decided to let me get some closeups, before executing an elaborate 4 jump manouvre and vanishing completely. ps: I’ve already had one frightened viewer remark that this is a little creepy. I must point out that this spider was (at best) 5mm in total size. ie: TINY! so it was much (much) more afraid of the huge all-seeing eye at the end of a long lens than I was of it, so don’t panic unduly. Here at 1:1 (cropped 3201×3206 for detail) /
A larger than average Jumping Spider taking an equal interest in me while I’m photographing it. Canon 100mm + 1.4x tc Northern Suburbs Crematorium and Memorial Gardens, Chatswood, NSW. If you look closely, you can see the reflection of grave stones in its eyes.
(usual place – dusk) I guess it’s all about knowing when to stop, and the last thing you need at 7:30pm on a Saturday after a heavy drinking session is for someone to give you a poke in the tummy to make you pull your head out of the jug and say cheese. I feel now as though I should have shown more understanding for its weakened condition; after all we’ve all had moments like this, right? – in the back of a taxi cab, it’s 4am after a heavy night, and now it’s a bumpy ride home, one more pothole should do it… rather touch and go, as it were. Of course then I would never have seen a caterpillar throw up on itself, now would I? Life is just brimming over with new experiences… Northern Suburbs Crematorium and Memorial Gardens, Delhi Rd, Chatswood / Ryde, NSW. Canon 5D2 + MPE at 5x / 1/200sec, f/13, ISO 800 + ringflash at 4:1 split / 5616×3744 pixels @ 240dpi (full 35mm, not cropped) / Processed in Lightroom and Photoshop (High Pass Sharpen, Linear Light blend)
