Location: Bodie Ghost Town / Highway 395 / California / Technique: HDR (High Dynamic Range) Historical “Bodie Ghost Town” is an old mining town off of highway 395. Till this day folks that visit Bodie have sworn sightings in this famous landmark. Murder was not uncommon during the gold rush days and rumor has it that ghosts still linger the dirt streets of Bodie. I found this playa on a recent trip up to Sierra Nevada and i knew I would be back. This dry lakebed backs up against a cinder cone and in the far background the Sierras can be seen. It can be found near Fossil Falls in the Mojave Desert.
Some of my more popular artwork based on customer and friend reviews. Our studio name is Around395 Photography. Hwy 395 is a major highway for tourists and it passes right by our small town.
The weather was really beautiful and ominous on that day. Everytime the sun would peek out I would drop everything and set up my tripod. This is Little Lakes Valley, Eastern Sierra, Ca and I’m still amazed that I live so close to someting so beautiful. This trail eventually ascends Morgan Pass and up into the alpine High Sierras. You can see them in the far background. Created from 2 exposures blended together.
This was taken in Little Lakes Valley, Eastern Sierras, Ca. I have submitted a few different photos from this hike and the lighting was just so intimate that I may just remember that day forever. This is the one furthest down the trail and closest to the mountains in the background. There are many meadows along the trail and they are usually very lush but by summer’s end they start to dry out like this. I thought it made for some nice contrast. You can see a little bit of the trail on the right leading into the pines.
In late fall, golden aspens and white shoots surround June Lake, California. Located in the Eastern Sierras along Highway 395, June Lake is one of four main lakes just north of Mammoth. Other lakes along the loop are Gull Lake, Silver Lake and Grant Lake.
Well over 9,000 feet, Mack Lake, bends around Rock Creek Canyon in the Eastern Sierras of California. Rock Creek Canyon is located along Highway 395 south of Mammoth Lakes, and west of Toms Place. Mack Lake is the first of many lakes within Little Lakes Valley and is located about 1/2 mile from the Mosquito Flat trailhead. Other amazing lakes in the area are Marsh Lake, Heart Lake, Box Lake, and Long Lake. This is truly an amazing journey if you ever head towards Bishop and Mammoth. The elevation can reach well over 12,000 feet and the views of the lakes and mountainscapes are breathtaking. I highly recommend the trip there in late summer or early fall.
Upper Yosemite Fall as seen from across one of the meadows in early spring. Yosemite National Park, California, is perhaps the world’s best known example of a glacier-carved canyon. Yosemite’s giant waterfalls, towering cliffs, rounded domes, and massive monoliths make it a natural marvel and one of the most visited places on Earth. Yosemite National Park is located in California’s Eastern Sierras. It is comprised of Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne Meadows, Glacier Point, and other high country wilderness areas. One of the main attractions of Yosemite are its majestic waterfalls. The main falls are Yosemite, Bridalveil, Vernal, Nevada, and Illilouette. The best time to visit the falls is in May since the water is gushing. Bridalveil usually has a neat rainbow in the afternoon.
This was taken on my way down from a long scramble up to Treasure Lakes, Little Lakes Valley, Eastern Sierra. It was raining a little here and there but I kept going because I’m not one to turn back once I’m 5 miles into a hike. Luckily the clouds began to break and it became a beautiful afternoon in the end.
One of my favorite hikes in the Eastern Sierras is through Little Lakes Valley. The trail follows Rock Creek to its source high in the mountains and continues on to connect with other trails. This was taken near the Mosquito Flats Trailhead in late summer. I still caught a few wildflowers in bloom since the valley is so lush.
Convict Lake is located along Highway 395 in the Eastern High Sierra just southeast of Mammoth Lakes, and due west of Crowley Lake nestled right up against Mount Morrison. The Lake has a similar appearance to Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada in that the water has a greenish tint surrounded by a mountain range. This one photograph was taken using super high contrast film with a polarizing filter to bring out the colors of the water. One of the many things to do around the lake is hike up into the John Muir Wilderness, fish on the lake and paddleboating. The lake was named after an incident in 1871, where a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City. A posse, led by Sheriff Robert Morrison, encountered the convicts near the head of what is now Convict Creek. Morrison was killed in the encounter, and Mount Morrison was named after him. (source Wiki – Convict Lake). This is one of three photographs from a series I have in my portfolio about Convict Lake, Mammoth Lakes area, CA.
This is a subpeak of Mount Morgan I guess, it’s unnamed. I was driving down a dirt road that leads into the canyon and the early morning shadows on this mountain just drew me in. I got out and took quite a few photos trying to capture it best. I think B&W works well with such a contrasty scene.
June Lake is located north of Mammoth and is well known for its fishing each year and spectacular colors each fall season. Highway 158 is a scenic drive and passes by four lakes which are all very nice to photograph: June Lake, Gull Lake, Silver Lake and Grant Lake. This photograph was taken near Boulder Lookout. Many of the cottonwoods and aspens will change colors into bright orange, yellow, and pink-red and mix nicely with all the pine trees. The Sierra Nevada Mountain range shows nicely in the background.
This is a photograph taken of Vernal falls, Yosemite National Park from the top of the Mist trail. The Trail starts near Happy Isle and winds its way up along the Merced River. There are basically 3 stages of where to take photographs from. The first stage is from the wooden bridge. This gives you a really nice long view of the Merced River, some nice twists in the river, and a view from a distance of the falls. The second stage is about half way up the John Muir trailhead which allows you to venture out over some large boulders and get some awesome “rushing” water images and still see the falls. The last stage is near the top where this photograph was taken and allows you to get up close to the falls and see some of the moss and rocks and mist as the waterfall clearly exposes itself. Vernal Falls is the most dangerous of all the falls at Yosemite National Park. There are a lot of slippery rocks and moss even on the trail and some of the steps are wet. This entire hike is well worth it and remember to take photographs at each of the stages. At the end, you can also check out Emerald Pool and the Silver Apron. Photograph taken with a Canon Elan, 20mm lens, f11 at 2 secs.
Mono Lake is truly an experience to visit and photograph. You can photograph it in black and white for crazy moods or in color for astonishing efffects. The rock structures which stand together and lace the lake are known as tufa and the water in the lake is one of the most salt-filled water lakes in the world. These tufa towers are calcium-carbonate spires formed by the interaction of freshwater springs and water leads and the alkaline in the lake. Mono lake is located north of Mammoth Lakes and June Lake and east of Lee Vining along Highway 120. More info on the lake: (taken from google sources) / Throughout its long existence, salts and minerals have washed into the lake from Eastern Sierra streams. Freshwater evaporating from the lake each year has left the salts and minerals behind so that the lake is now about 2 1/2 times as salty and 80 times as alkaline as the ocean. Mono Lake is a majestic body of water covering about 65 square miles. It is an ancient lake, over 1 million years old—one of the oldest lakes in North America. It has no outlet. (rescanned for proper color) Taken with a Canon Elan, 20mm lens, polarizing filter for reds, 4:30pm fall.
This is a photo I have been holding onto for a long time waiting to process. I finally decided how I wanted it to look so here it is! This is Lake George, in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, Eastern Sierras, Ca. Fly fisherman often fish off of this shelf. I was just starting a hike that passes the lake and this scene caught my eye. The mountain in the background doesn’t have an official name but I have heard it called Red Mountain before. There was a lot of mining activity there in the 1800’s and early 1900’s.
I found this playa on a recent trip up to Sierra Nevada and i knew I would be back. This dry lakebed backs up against a cinder cone and in the far background the Sierras can be seen. It can be found near Fossil Falls in the Mojave Desert. I decided to do a B&W conversion of this photo due to popular request. Hope you enjoy it!
Highway 395 is my favorite road, as it is a portal to the Eastern Sierras, White Mountains, and Death Valley.
Box Lake can be found in Eastern Sierra Nevada, California. It is in an area known as Little Lakes Valley. It is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. This is an HDR image.
This is the HDR version of this photograph. The weather was really beautiful and ominous that day. Everytime the sun would peek out I would drop everything and set up my tripod. This is Little Lakes Valley and I’m still amazed that I live so close to something so beautiful. This trail eventually ascends Morgan Pass and up into the alpine High Sierras. The Little Lakes Valley Trail is must see if you are in the Sierra Nevada region. It is a great trail because a lot can be seen without much elevation gain, but if you want there are always those hard to get to lakes in the valley that provide a challenge. Unfortunately, because of its beauty it is also one of the busiest trails around so you have to time it right. This photo was taken a few miles into the trail at a bridge crossing Ruby Creek which drains into Heart Lake in the background. In the springtime this area is covered in wildflowers. This was taken near the end of summer. This is an HDR created using Photomatix Pro.

The Alabama Hills were the location of many American westerns. Here they are seen in the foreground with Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the continental United States in the background. I guess I should add that the Alabama Hills got their name from a Civil War ship that for some reasom the early settlers were fond of. The landscape is so rugged and wonderful. i hiked around for hours and only covered a small patch of ground.
