Thank you all for your support of this image. It’s a bit scary to put these things out there, and I really appreciate all the comments it’s gotten. This is truly about me – where I’ve come from as a girl, and what I’ve gone through as a woman. I think it’s an image that many can relate to in some way, and as mentioned in some comments, it hits nerves. Rather than explain the photo, I’ll leave it up to the viewer. I think it may mean something different to each individual that looks at it. I don’t want to take that from you. To me, it has an important message. See what you can get from it, and I hope it will benefit you in some way.
Copyright 2005 Kerry McFarland / I started noticing that when the sun would go down, little flickers would light up everyone’s windows in their house. I’d be out walking (I lived in the desert and it was too hot to do so earlier), with all the beauty outside surrounding me, and silence; Then these houses…flickering. Every night, after 5, I’d see the same thing. I wouldn’t see people sitting outside enjoying the sunset. I wouldn’t see people gathered around a BBQ, I wouldn’t see people out walking with their lovers, enjoying one another. Shades drawn, little flickers. I felt the neglect. So much is going on outside, yet many people spend countless hours watching a little box. What about what’s going on right in their own backyard, their family, their city…their country. The complacency is frightening. That is what this series is about.
This is my little girl. She was just a few weeks old when this was taken. It was Halloween, and she was dressed as, and slept like an angel. It was the only chance I got to have her still…it was glorious to watch her.

Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed. Storm Jameson (1891 –1986)

[Double Exposure Project #1 – Oregon and San Diego Exposed] This is one of the images produced through double exposing a roll of film with my amazingly talented, generous, and dear friend Matt Adamik. This was our first attempt at working with this process and I am in love with every image. Matt lives in Oregon and I live in San Diego. He shot the roll first, mailed it to me, and I shot over top his photos. Neither of us knew what the other was shooting. The results are astounding and breathtaking. And fun! We will be collaborating on many more double exposure projects in the very near future. A wonderful way to bring Oregon and San Diego together, as well as the styles and friendships of two photographers. I am absolutely in love with this type of photography! I highly recommend it for everyone. Thank you Matt for everything! Goggles Down! /
Just like you, once upon a time i was a beautiful promise.

I have been scanning lots of negatives lately and came across these that I took last autumn. I didn’t initially print them because my beloved Leica R3 had a light leak – some negs were beyond saving but I have managed to get quite a few where I feel the light leakage has actually been beneficial to the outcome. I may be posting more from this series or might just put them on my website .. they work better as a body of work than singular. You get more of an insight into childhood and how a walk in a frost laden woodland opens up a new world to them.
