This photograph is one in a large series covering part of the 2006-2007 bushfires in Victoria (Gippsland in particular). This one was taken on December 14 (at around 2pm which was over 6hrs before twilight!) on the central Gippsland plains. Early afternoon saw the region plunge into darkness and rain begin to fall – black ash/mud rain fell from massive pyrocumulus clouds overhead generated from the intense heat and the increased localised atmospheric instability from the fires – Sale actually reported just under 3mm. / This particular day was the most devastating during the season which saw the south divide complex burn for over 60days ! Sadly 1 life was lost at Seaton on this actual afternoon – about 25 km’s from where i took this photograph, numerous houses were lost through Toongabbie, Cowwar wier and Seaton as eyewitness reported walls of fire over 100ft high coming over the hills at the back of their properties. Emergency radio broadcasts filled the airwaves as did emergency vehicles on the roads. During this devastating drama there was the fantastic feeling of ‘aussie mateship’ as all around ppl were offering whatever they had to help strangers and locals alike – a day i will never forget ! more of my bushfire related photography may be viewed by clicking on the preview image below / *

Photo taken by collegue Simon Frankel. Then edited in Photoshop by myself. Thankyou to Simon for allowing me to post the photo. This was not a sand storm as some may think. Just over the hill was a raging fire that was taking control in 2006. They were taken at Pike River during the bush fire that burnt out around 120,000 hectares of scrub just north of the Riverland. / It was a mixture of smoke, stormy grey cloud and some sun trying to break through.

This is a painting I did three years ago. It was intended as a tribute to the great city of Liverpool, England and whilst being a bit whimsical it did include images of the Anglican Cathedral, the Catholic Cathedral, Saint John’s Beacon and of course the Beatles. I swapped it with a popular Vancouver (Canada) artist, John Ferrie, for one of his lovely floral acrylics. I wish I’d never swapped now … although I still like John’s painting and it still / hangs on our wall. Owing to a misunderstanding of English etiquette, when I sent John a photo of his painting hanging on our wall he failed to reciprocate. A photo of my painting hanging on John’s wall would have meant an awful lot to me, ‘cos I really respected the guy. Instead of good-naturedly returning my compliment, he claimed I was forcing him to “jump through hoops” when I reminded him a month later. He refused to take the photo and stopped emailing me, claiming I must be suffering from depression … sad, but these things happen and I wish him no ill … he’s a good artist and was a good friend while it lasted. Wherever you are John, I wish you a happy 2009.
