  • Asteroids was a video arcade game released in 1979 by Atari Inc. It was one of the most popular and influential games of the Golden Age of Arcade Games. The objective of Asteroids was to score as many points as possible by destroying asteroids and flying saucers. The player controlled a ship that could rotate left and right, fire shots straight forward, and thrust forward. The player could also send their ship into hyperspace, causing it to disappear and reappear in a random location on the screen (with the risk of self-destructing or appearing on top of an asteroid). Each stage started with a few asteroids drifting in random directions on the screen. Objects wrapped around the screen edges. As the player shots asteroids, they broke into smaller asteroids which frequently moved faster and were more difficult to hit. Smaller asteroids also scored higher points. Periodically, a flying saucer appeared on one side of the screen and moved across to the other before disappearing again. There was a minimalist soundtrack featuring a memorable deep-toned electronic “heartbeat”, which quickened as the asteroid density was reduced by the player’s fire. Once the screen had been cleared of all asteroids and flying saucers, a new set of large asteroids appeared. The number of asteroids increased each round up to a maximum of twelve. The game was over when the player had lost all remaining lives.

  • Wonderful place in Oregon, huge deep caldera lake in crater of dormant volcano. Theoretically the volcano might blow again, like Mt. St. Helen’s. So it is not always called extinct.

  • Oils and mixed media. Advent Purple is the colour chosen for Pope John Paul II in this painting. John Paul looks to the light which is symbolic of the Catholic faith. The quote chosen is one that touched the heart of Ireland’s youth in 1979.

  • The finale of the Star Hotel riot in 1979, Newcastle, Australia

  • Early evening in the back bar of the Star Hotel on the night of the 1979 riot. Local band Heroes played an original song “We will remember the night of the star…”

  • On September 19th 1979, 2 police cars were burnt during a riot involving 10,000 people (including onlookers) at the Star Hotel, Newcastle. About 40 local police without any riot gear attempted to control the crowd. There were no serious injuries. The Newcastle mayor Joy Cummings during the subsequent trials begged for clemency citing the frustrations of high unemployment and poverty as extenuating factors for those accused. The Lock Up museum where many arrested were brought to on the night is next month hosting a 30th Anniversary exhibition to remember the Star. If anyone has any memorabilia, memories or photos they would like to share please contact me or co-curator Geraldine Bobsien on 49252265.

  • This room with its many arches and side windows was for me a highlight of fountains. The lawns were great, the ruins impressive, the streams delightful, but this place got my vote. Who ever built it new their job.

  • #12 in a series of shirts based on classic Album covers from music history. I’m not going to detail the title of artist but, please feel free to add a comment with your guess of which album my design is based on. Be sure to check the rest of my Profile to see what other classic albums I have used for my inspiration. The whole project was inspired by the fanastic work of the website http://www.filmtheblanks.com/ where you can find many movie posters.
