  • African market trader
    by Colin Hollywood

    US$4.13–US$110.20

This trader seemed more interested in his mobile phone than his market stall. / The traditional costume was wonderful but looks rather incongruous with the modern technology! / I shot the image with a zoom lens, carrying my camera at waist level so he didnt know I was photographing him! (More luck than judgement!) / Baku market, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. / / Aviation / Birds / Black and white/monotone / Flowers and plants / Nautical / Selective colouring / Sepia toned

  • Storm approaching
    by Colin Hollywood

A heavy storm approaching from the north, with a rainbow just visible in the dark clouds.

  • Apartments
    by Colin Hollywood

    US$4.13–US$110.20

These apartments in Corralejo, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands used to be the Corralejo Beach Hotel. / Since the hotel closed and their conversion to private use, they have been painted in this vivid lime green and white combination! / I was attracted to photograph them because of their abstract quality in this colour combination. / / Aviation / Birds / Black and white/monotone / Flowers and plants / Nautical / Selective colouring / Sepia toned

  • Edited with selective colour and to emphasise the textures in the boat’s rough paintwork. / Corralejo, Fuerteventura – April 2008 Aviation / Birds / Black and white/monotone / Flowers and plants / Nautical / Selective colouring / Sepia toned

  • Towards Lobos island
    by Colin Hollywood

    US$3.99–US$106.40

A view across the water from the northern tip of Fuerteventura towards Lobos island, with the waves breaking over the volcanic rocks. Located off the north end of Fuerteventura, Lobos Island is named after the colonies of monk seals, or sea wolves, that lived on the island until the 19th century. It has an area of 6 km² and has been nature reserve without permanent human population since 1982. The island is accessible to tourists via a short ferry ride from Corralejo. The local lighthouse was automated in 1968. In 1405, Islote de Lobos served as resupply base for Jean de Béthencourt’s conquest of Fuerteventura. / My other Fuerteventura images here / Aviation / Birds / Black and white/monotone / Flowers and plants / Nautical / Selective colouring / Sepia toned

  • Fuerteventura coastline
    by Colin Hollywood

    US$4.13–US$110.20

Oh to be there again! The sea really was that colour too! The rocks are volcanic.

  • I found a small cove where, despite the nice weather, the waves were crashing in with the full force of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • I used to live in the Yorkshire Dales. This scene on Fuerteventura reminds me of them, with the dry stone walls and the hills, but without the cold and damp!

  • A view from near the top of one of the peaks in the Betancuria Massif. / Betancuria (the old capital of Fuerteventura) is tucked away in the centre of this mountain range and can only be reached by the mountain roads. / Although EU grants have improved the condition of these roads, they are still scary to drive weaving their route precariously as they cling to the mountain side. On one side a vertical wall and the other side a sheer drop! / A local anecdote about this road is as follows: The old priest of Betancuria died and when he reached the gates of heaven he was asked to wait outside. He was dismayed when some time later Paco, the local bus driver, arrived and was instantly admitted. ‘Why has Paco gone straight to heaven when I, a holy man, am asked to wait” he asked the angel at the gate. “Well” replied the angel “in your church we noticed that many people fell asleep during your sermon however on Paco’s bus nobody slept and everyone prayed on the way up to the church”! Aviation / Birds / Black and white/monotone / Flowers and plants / Nautical / Selective colouring / Sepia toned

  • The survivor
    by Colin Hollywood

    US$3.99–US$106.40

This tree looks dead, but seems to be surviving in the dry heat of the Fuerteventura “moonscape”.

  • Captured at a Romany festival on Fuerteventura, July 2007. Update… I saw this online and couldnt resist adding it to this photo!

  • One of the colourful goats found on the Canary Islands.

  • Timeless waves
    by Colin Hollywood

    US$3.99–US$106.40

I thought a sepia tone might be something different for a seascape and emphasise the countless years that these waves have been crashing over the rocks.

  • Palm leaves
    by Colin Hollywood

  • The former capital of Fuerteventura, Betancuria has a historic centre overlooked by its church. / Founded in the early 15th century by the Frenchman Juan de Bethencourt, Betancuria was the capital of the island of Fuerteventura until 1834. This meant that from its foundation the town became a political, administrative and religious centre. The church-cathedral of Santa María de Betancuria is the most important building in the town. / Originally built in the Norman-Gothic style, the temple was remodelled in the 17th century and preserves some features from the original structure, such as the belltower and some sections of the columns. Aviation / Birds / Black and white/monotone / Flowers and plants / Nautical / Selective colouring / Sepia toned
