  • Nobby's by SoniaE

Nobby’s Head has, for all of my life, been the lighthouse at the end of my favorite beach, the shining beacon in my night sky to the south. It’s the guardian of Newcastle and of us Novocastrians, it’s our best loved icon. From 1804 an open coal fire could be seen burning for several kilometers out to sea, marking the entrance to the Newcastle River (NSW, Australia). In 1821, the coal fire was replaced with an oil burning light; this was unsuccessful – so, a coal fire burned again until 1858. In that year the lighthouse was built; only the third in NSW. Originally perching on a 90m high islet, during the construction of Newcastle Harbour 46m was removed from the top of the islet; which was then joined to the mainland by a causeway. A further 25m was removed to accommodate building of the lighthouse and signal station. A 20,000 candle-power light was attended by three keepers until 1935, when it was converted to electricity and demanned. In June 2001 Nobby’s was automated. Today the signal station and 3 cottages are disused and public access is limited. The site has been the scene of much controversy over the years. In 1854 the islet was scheduled to be blown away to improve the harbour; but strong public protests forced cessation of this work of destruction. Today, Nobbys Head is listed on the Newcastle City Council’s heritage register for its historic, aesthetic, research and social significance. A tender has recently been released for the use of the site – this will be one restaurant I will definitely frequent!
