  • Florence by Mec & TuT Photography

    Florence, Italy.

  • Gethsemane by oneillstudios

Judas Betrays Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, for some money. Arguably the most famous betrayal of all time. What flashed across my mind, was Judas’ brutal materialism, and the lack of satisfaction it gave him. He topped himself a few hours later. It’s particularly poignant in this part of Germany-completely unaffected by the war (the rest of Germany was pretty much destroyed)-and wealth flows like a river. Yet, I have never witnessed such miserable, dour, depressed, uncharismatic people. Completely unhelpful, selfish and possessive, and desperate for more. Still, most of us would chose to be miserable millionaire than a miserable pauper. Helps pay the bills. So mustn’t judge, but I’ve already done that. The image is a slightly enhanced wood carving found on the door of Constance Roman Catholic Cathedral, Germany. What is also interesting, to me, was the portrayal of Jesus. Often the Catholic Church has portrayed Jesus as a white Anglo-Saxon—slightly feminine especially the sacred heart stuff. So, often he is caricatured as a freaky peace loving hippy—a classic example is South Park. Here, however, he seems to be portrayed as a man. Not significantly different from the others in the image. Not much can be used as a caricature. Or perhaps I lack imagination. I can’t help thinking that Jesus has suffered bad press. I think it’s fair to say from both followers and enemies alike. Even a quick read of the Biblical (and extra-Biblical Gospels) gives us a pretty different portrayal of him from the way he seems in popular imagery. That last remark is controversial, I know-but it’s not meant to be offensive-thought provoking, I hope. I think a good thing, indeed an academic thing, is always to read the source material for yourself. I would encourage those who haven’t, to read the Gospel material for themselves.
