Week 3

Here is my choice for Week 3 (and what a difficult choice it was, given the amazing artwork in this group!):

Gorilla – color pencil

I chose this because first of all, when I initially saw it I would have sworn it was a photo! The intricate details in the facial features and the fur are so fantastically lifelike and a real tribute to the skills of the artist, Marlene Piccolin. But what also drew me to it was the facial expression that Marlene captured… She showed so much personality in this beautiful gorilla with the knowing eyes and the sly but kind grin that it drew me in immediately. Beautiful work, Marlene, and well done.

This image is fantastic, and I think it is fair to say very lifelike. While Erin is correct in her observation that it does look like a photograph, to be fair to Marlene coloured pencils is her medium and therefore it is the realism that really counts. Not that I have been so close to a gorilla as to see the reflection in their eyes.

Congratulations Marlene, and Well done Erin – you got this choice spot on. This image for me is one of such unique and special character. The face, so lifelike simply compels one to look [and we all know we shouldn’t look at a gorilla right?], it just can’t be helped. Looking at your description on this image Marlene, I see it is your first attempt with coloured pencils – I really don’t know what to say to that, other than OMG, WOW! Keep up with this, your talent is remarkable.
