GROUP COLLABORATION - SAMHAIN IN THE UNDERWORLD

Spirit Walks Challenge

Ten groups have come together in a challenge to welcome All Hallow’s Eve/Samhain/Halloween, the beginning of winter, for the southern hemisphere.

The participating groups are Practising the Dark Arts; Blood Red – All things vampiric; Monsters Ink; THE PHANTASMAGORICAL; Short stories – Spherical Scriptings; In The Beginning – Ancient Practices; Fantasy Art; The Art of 3D; Myths, Legends, and Fairy Tales and Flash Fiction.

Background and Inspiration
All Hallow’s Eve is the day when the worlds merge, that of Spirit and flesh, where the veils are at their thinnest, and the Ancestors can freely roam between the two membranes of time and existence. We can communicate more clearly with them, communing together in dreams and shadows.
Samhain corresponds to the Wisdom Cycle of life, the Winter Deities, and thus ensures that our communing with the Ancestors is clear and well grounded.
Samhain is when the Wild Hunt emerges from Faerie to roam the winter countryside. Mortals getting in the path of the Hunt could be kidnapped and brought to the land of the dead.

How to be a part of it
Create an image and/or written work that captures the essence of an aspect of the above information in a way relevant to Dark Art and Occultism, psychosomatics’s or the metaphysical theme of the group.
Add your work to the group, and paste a link to it in the forum topic here, so I know it’s an entry!
The challenge is open to the whole world, not just people in the southern hemisphere

How it will work
Enter your work to the challenge as above BUT MAKE YOUR ENTRY RELEVANT TO THE GROUP THEME.
The hosts will judge a winning image and written work for the group.
The group winners will then be open to a public vote to pick the overall winners across all ten groups!

Entries close midnight (your time) April 28th.
Group winners will be announced April 30th, and public voting will run for a week (voting details will be provided at that time) to decide the overall winning image and written work (and winning group!)
Prizes are yet to be confirmed by RedBubble, but don’t let that hold you back from this record breaking, group collaborative challenge!

Written works need to be 1000 words or less. Poems and stories welcome.

This challenge is in the spirit of fun and group interaction, and is not about determining if one group is better than another :)

IF YOU DO NOT POST A LINK HERE TO LET ME KNOW IT IS AN ENTRY, IT WILL NOT BE INCLUDED…

Here is my written entry. Can also be found as part of the flash fiction group.

I was inspired by the following information:
One aspect of Samhain is the Feast of the Dead or the Dumb Supper which is held on Samhain eve. It is a night to honor one’s ancestors and to celebrate their lives, for it is on this night that the veil between the living and the dead is thin, and communication is possible.

Why celebrate SAMHAIN IN THE UNDERWORLD in the Southern Hemisphere?
Samhain is a celtic/gaelic festival which goes back thousands of years and was hijacked by the Romans/Christianity to celebrate the dead on All Hallows (all souls day) known as “The day of the dead” in some countries notably Italy. Considering the rich and diverse folklore associated with the aborigional peoples of the Southern Hemisphere is it not worth noting and celebrating their festivals for the turning/changing of the seasons as opposed to the celebretions/traditions brought by the colonists? Oiche Samhna!

Hi Shay…

If I was Aboriginal, it would be acceptable to do so…. however the majority of My ancestory is Gaelic….. Scottish mainly… bit of welsh… lots of English… oh and everything under the sun… Why do not other European colonised countries of the west do the same… with the Native American’s etc. I mean… my guess is it would be quite shallow for a non Indigenous person to enact ancient celebrations without an invitation or a blood connection to do so… I certainly wouldn’t feel comfortable in doing so… and I have more connection to that community than a lot of European Australians.

Given that we stole their land… it would be disrespectful from my opinion… and in essence, your observation has solidified something I have spiritually felt for a very long time… and that is the spiritual dispossession from the land of “my people” that has come from time and colonisation… where do I fit in a country that’s been built on the blood of the original inhabitants and the sweat and toil of the people I have descended from whilst they were participating in such ill gotten history… it’s a conundrum I hope I will find peace with one day!

Thanks for the comment though, it’s very thought provoking… but again… European Australians barely understand the nature of this young blind countries evolution (nor are many inclinded to accept it) and there is still very much pain and to participate in such sacred culture is not something that you just Do… if you catch my drift… it’s a little taboo unless you have connected with it in a meaningful and accepted way…
