—-—-—
I’d like you guys to do a few things:
1. Tell me what you think of the photo.
2. Tell me what techniques you see used here (like rule of thirds, open aperture, fast shutter, etc)
3. Tell me what post-processing you think would be a good idea for this photo (if any).

Remember to play nice or your post will be deleted and your involvement in this group will be considered for termination.

(Its a good idea to click the images link and view it in full before critiquing!)

OMG,, this looks exactly like my daughter’s gown,, she got married this Aug…...
I like the width of shoulder across the top third,,,,and the arm down right side,, frames it nicley, aS well as the sofr surve of her waist,,,, adds softeness to an otherwise rectangular image!!
I might try to bump the contrat a bit to give more detail to the buttons and the lace…..
well done!!
Linda

And to give more detail to the pearls in the lace and take the emphasis off the shoulders… so to speak. But I like it. Except I notice the right elbow kind of weird on the edge. Maybe crop that a little more or a little less. Like the pearl bracelet showing, though.

I love the lace and buttons, I love the back of brides dresses – always so many details. I would crop this a little more on the left as it is distracting to me to have that little bit of her arm there – I also think it would make her bottom look smaller if you trim it down the left a little. That would still leave the shape on the other side. I am not sure about what I am saying though- I would have to look at it once i did it- but may be worth a try.

I wanted to add- this photo is better than anything I have taken- and so I feel a bit like a shouldn’t say anything so feel free to ignore my suggestion. Well done on capturing such a beautiful image of such a special day

I think a crop from the left would do two things – remove the ever so tiny bit of arm just showing and also push the vertical lines of buttons further towrds the LH third and away from its near central position.
I would also revisit the B&W conversion to try and gain some further contrast. I amunsure how you may have performed the conversion, however if you have Photoshop CS3 (and perhaps earlier) there is a choice for B&W (rather than sliding the RGB saturation slider to the left) where you can adjust the saturations of each of the 6 colours (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Cyan, Magenta) – while it sounds strange to be adjusting colour saturation in a B&Wimage, it will actually work very well in bringing up the contrast.
I like the contemporary approach of only catching part of the person, and the backside too – rather than the traditional “all smiles” poses.

Thanks so much to all of you—your advice is invaluable to me as i am really a little more than a beginner and find all the enhancing of images quite daunting. I took this shot almost as it is and did crop a little of the wierd arm side but i guess i was a bit too cautious. I did change it to black and white but only in picassa as i only have Gimp and i am not sure what i am doing in it yet!!! I will give all you advice a go and re post the image i would be pleased to hear your reactions. Thanks again for all the positive feed back.

I did notice when I viewed it larger that there was a bit of a blur on the dress, I would suggest either a bit of an unsharp mask or a hi-pass mask there to sharpen up the details. This is actually an image the lends itself well to vingetting if you wanted to try that instead of cropping off bits.

Otherwise I like the image and it’s a nice creative bridal shot. One that would go in an album of “before the wedding” kind of thing that most brides I’m sure would love. (I wouldn’t know as I’m not married. lol)

thanks again for all the advice its amazing the things you can do to correct images—i am still learning and having so much fun, Gimp as you say Linda keeps you awake at night it is just fascinating so many things to try and also to frustrate you. I will see how i get on with unsharp mask or hi-pass mask Nicole thanks. i am afraid i know nothing of vingetting so would be pleased to get a quick tutorial when you have time lol.
thanks again :o))
