I’d like you guys to do a few things:
1. Tell me what you think of the photo.
2. Tell me what techniques you see used here (like rule of thirds, open aperture, fast shutter, etc)
3. Tell me what post-processing you think would be a good idea for this photo (if any).

Remember to play nice or your post will be deleted and your involvement in this group will be considered for termination.

(Its a good idea to click the images link and view it in full before critiquing!)

Mannum Sunrise

by: Steve Chapple

Early morning across the beautiful River Murray at Mannum. Dark brooding clouds being lit from behind by the rising sun.

Thanks Jim for the post.

No filters here, straight out of the camera using manual settings. I find the image a little dark but playing in photoshop I was worried I might destroy the mood created by the clouds and breaking sun, so left it as shot.
Rule of thirds is poor but having the ferry a little further out and off to one side made it a little small and to the left was too much land.

Interestingly the red start to the morning faded out very quickly but about 15 minutes later came back far more spread out.

this certainly pays being viewed large and, clearly, steve, you’ve thought through different crops.

I think I would like to see some of the sky and the rt hand side cut back so that the ferry isn’t quite so central and I’m also wondering how it would look in b&w. I know the sky is special but it competes with those wonderful white reflections in the water so that I don’t settle on one or the other.

just my thoughts, of course…

Viewed large makes all the difference - I think it is pretty great as is. I’d play with the crop and lighting in PS but you may come back to this very image, I suspect. Yes the ferry is smack dab in the middle, - perhaps just crop a bit of the right side to put it off center a bit without losing any of the light. VERY nice.

Hi Steve,

For me the image has too much negative space, I would consider cropping from the Lefthand side just below the pier, across to just behind the ferry, and then up to where the clouds are more grey than red. This will bring the horizon up to the top third of the image, and you will loose a lot of the grey negative space.
