The Furry Case

She headed to the airport
In a taxi, in the rain,
Wearing her good coat
Bought in Barcelona, Spain.

She eyed the driver,
And blurted out her mind.
“I bought this coat
When Mom wiped your behind.”

He responded nervously
So as not to tempt
Her eyes to pierce further
And her lips to vent.

He pulled up to the airport
And opened her door.
“Had you taken a quicker route,
I would give you more.”

She handed him money
And clutched her furry case
Walking to the terminal
In a geriatric race.

She walked up to the kiosk
Shoving out of the way
A man in a wheelchair,
Three kids and a Shar-Pei.

Eying the flight attendant
Staring back at her,
She sized him up quickly
And smiled with a spur.

“First, what’s a dog
Doing on my flight?
I complain in protest.
It will keep me up all night.”

“They purchased a ticket
And are within their rights.
One pet per trip
We allow on our flights”

“Fine! Who cares?
I haven’t slept for days.
So what if an old lady
Walks around in a haze.”

He eyed her furry case
And whipped from his side
A tiny tape measure
Coming at her in stride.

Squinting at her face,
He said, “This bag won’t fit.
It has to be checked.
Not allowed where you sit.”

She took off her coat
And threw it to the floor,
The one bought in Spain
With pearly button decor.

She rolled up the sleeves
Of her frilly dress.
She adjusted her hat
Prepared for a mess.

“Listen little pipsqueak
Barely old enough to chew,
That bag stays with me.
It sticks to me like glue.”

“You are a tough one.”
He grinned with some glee.
“We’ll make an exception,
But not two or three.”

She smiled and bent
To pick up her things.
“You’re a kind young man.
What a joy that brings.”

“What’s in the furry case
May I ask without fit?
Must be important
To cause such a snit.”

She looked at him sternly,
A glint in one eye.
“These are my husbands.
I soon will die.”

She opened the case
To show him her prize,
Six little urns
All the same size.

“I’m taking their ashes
To Niagra Falls
Where I had my honeymoons
Six of them, all.”

Good grief… I don’t know. Was feeling like writing in Dr. Seuss style. It just fell out.
