Richard Trevithick's London Steam Carriage 1803 by

My vector drawing (not auto trace or copy) of Richard Trevithick’s London Steam Carriage on a background of my coloured pencil drawing of Richmond in Yorkshire.

792 views at 19/09/2013.

Richard Trevithick built a prototype road locomotive at Camborne in his native Cornwall and in 1801 he ran this several hundred yards up a hill with several people hanging on it and whilst they were in a pub celebrating the event it set fire to the shed it was in and was destroyed.

On completion of a new Steam Carriage in July of 1803 the London Steam Carriage, as it was known, was driven about 10 miles through the streets of London to Paddington and back through Islington with 7 or 8 guest passengers, the streets having been closed to other vehicles. This was the first trip of a self-powered passenger carrying vehicle in the world.

I have opened a shop with CafePress to sell some of my designs on clothing, iPhone & laptop cases, jewellery and lots more:

So much detail in there I have not got the patience to draw little bits like that :) fabulous work!

  • My wife also wonders where I get the patience :)
The difference in my drawings though is that it would take me weeks to complete such a pencil drawing of the town and just one day for the vector drawing of the carriage :)

Well, Dennis, I am delighted! You have introduced me to an appreciation for “vector drawing” which I had never heard of before reading your Profile! I love your work! Is the drawing you did in 1952 in your portfolio? You are my first ever contact with Romania! Cheers from Washington State. Maggie PS, yes like Gena, I really enjoyed the historical description!

  • Many, many, thanks for your interest, it is certainly very welcome :)
Here is my 1952 drawing :) I am not sure that it was 1952 but my mother just knew that it was anything up to that date :

Whenever I produce art of any kind (which used to apply also to all my photographs that were accepted into agencies and libraries) I seek to find out as much information about the subject as I possibly can (I think this brings about a must truer feeling in my images :)

Boo Hoo! I can’t get into the link of your 1952 drawing! I can’t make a link in my RB either. My computer must block them???? I think your drawing should be at the top of your profile. It is so special to have been with RB since then. Congratulations!

  • OK my ‘masterpiece’ is now in pride of place in my profile :):)
