Taken a few moments ago as Hermann the Tortoise was passing through our garden. He was very cooperative with my camera and stayed around for a while before taking off, uphill, at a fair pace before being stopped by the chain link fence. I was able to easily pick him up and he stayed out of his shell and well aware of me, until I popped him through our gate and into the field beyond :)
The Hermanns tortoise is a beautiful species of tortoise. They are very hardy, stay small, and are quite friendly. There are two subspecies, Western and Eastern. The Eastern Hermanns (Testudo hermanni boettgeri) get a little bigger and are much more common than the Westerns (Testudo hermanni hermanni).

I have opened a shop with CafePress to sell some of my designs on clothing, iPhone & laptop cases, jewellery and lots more:

  • Thank you Sam :)
We get quite a few Hermann’s around the property about this this time of year, every year.
