My digital painting using a combination of landscape2 and Andy’s Brushes AOPs in DAP, of Beck Isle Cottage (17th century) one of the most photographed homes in the UK.
Information derived from the Thornton le Dale website and original photograph used with the kind permission of photographer Pamela Benn.
The village’s history dates back to at least the neolithic period, and it is known that the Romans were in the area sometime between 50BC and AD50.
The not uncommon name “Thornton” is thought to have been given to the area by the Angles, who conquered this part of Yorkshire around AD500, and relates to thorn bushes.
Addition of “le Dale” came later, during the railway age, to distinguish it from other Thorntons.
