The River Danube ( Blue Danube) is the longest river in the EU and second longest in Europe as a whole. The river originates in the Black Forest in Germany as the Brigach and Breg rivers. These join at the German town Donaueschingen, after which it is known as the Danube and now flows for a distance of 2850 km, passing through 10 countries, before emptying into the Black Sea in Romania. The river has long been recognised as a thing of beauty and still attracts awe and reverence from the beholder. The waltz ‘The Blue Danube’ written in 1867 by Johann Strauss, became the symbol of imperial Vienna and still holds an important place in the world today.
