In 2011 several adult Hermanns were to be seen in our garden, in Romania and we believed that this must have been the mating season. Yesterday we were walking nearby, at about the same time of year and spotted a Hermann in an area that hasn’t seen water since the Winter snows melted.
My wife thought that it might like a drink and offered it water in a red plastic cup. It approached the cup and drank deeply for quite a while :)
The Hermanns tortoise (Testudo hermanni boettgeri) is a beautiful species of tortoise. They are very hardy, stay small, and are quite friendly. Until recently the climate here was temperate but is now ‘extreme’ to say the least and the Hermann is struggling to survive.During the hibernation we had huge ammounts of snow and temperatures down to -25 and during the summer temperatures reached +42.
There are two subspecies, Western and Eastern. The Eastern Hermanns (Testudo hermanni boettgeri) get a little bigger and are much more common than the Westerns (Testudo hermanni hermanni).
