A Modern Day Golgotha

A Modern Day Golgotha

The Angel of the North probably one of the most photographed works of public art in the north of England if not the country as a whole. I felt it required a fresh view and as Easter was fast approaching and the word Angel being Hebrew for messenger I thought an artistic take would be to re-create the crucifixion scene for a modern day audience.

This is three images combined to make this scene.

A Modern Day Golgotha belongs to the following groups:

This is brilliant Glen, we were just talking about The Angel in out lecture a few weeks ago I would love to photograph her and i would be very interested in seeing the same shot you have here but with the sky cropped out making a panorama i think that would be also nice.

    Thanks Susan,

The Angel was taken from several angles and transferred to a new PS document where I blended in the sky taken at Flamborough Head.

I produced it in 2007 a couple of weeks before Easter to reflect the crucifixion story. I left the huge expanse of sky in purposely because of course the crucifixion story does not end there is speaks of hope and resurrection and I wanted to try and get that message across to encompass the whole Easter story in one image.

You never know though I might try a crop…...............One day!

I am glad you like it.

Thanks for your comments x x

  • Glen Allen replied

It is. This is a composite of three images to create a scene that only exists in my imagination. The sunset is from somewhere else completely. I wanted to create a work of art from the angel rather than just record it becasue everyone else has done that I wanted to be different.

Ohhh yeah, this is my favourite north east landmark and I go here at least once per week. I have hundreds, maybe even thousands of photographs of our Angel.

Here are a few I put on a website I’m putting together = click click

  • Glen Allen replied

It must be the most photographed piece of public art in the country, I have only got up close once and decided I wanted to do something no one else had so hence the composite. (Then fact it was coming up to Easter in 2006 helped big time too lol).

Thanks Sally, it must be the single most photographed Artwork in Britain and is known worldwide now. I wanted to do something utterly different with it though as you can see.
