The stock market

Isn’t another bad day (yet again) on the stock markets the perfect time to show you my latest still life in the “nostalgia” series, entitled: the stock market.
As usual, old and new elements are mingled together. The painted with light technique was used again, as well as digital manipulation to get the end result I was after.
It’s strange, I spent months planning this shot, preparing and getting the props and then in a few hours time it’s shot. It’s almost an anti-climax.
Well, I hope you enjoy it!
By the way, this is the fourth installment in this series, I’m withholding the second one which I consider my masterpiece in this series. I’ll probably upload it in a few days.

Peter, your attention to details – composition, light, balance, and color – is remarkable. Wonderful work

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Thank you so much Alteredlllus. I spent a lot of time on the details, that’s true, but that’s the part I love so much.

dit is zeker al fantastisch belicht

  • Peter Zentjens replied

    Bedankt majo / thanks majo,
but the more I look at this one, the more I’m starting to doubt which of the two I favor. On top of that: tastes differ, so, I should upload the (for the moment) final one and let the community decide for itself.
Of course, the question of which one to add to the masterpiece group remains in that case…

This picture makes me think about Italian Mafia…the old style..the objects, the cup of wine..and the money..:). The center piece, I don’t know how you got that money counter machine (I don’t know how else to call it), but it’s simply beautiful…a real “nostalgia”.

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Thank again Ellena. I borrowed the old calculator from a friend, like most of the subjects in my Nostalgia series.

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Yes in deed and far from it, as perfect isn’t the word I’d be using for this day. I’m starting to get a wee bid worried about my life savings with all our major banks crashing. ;^)

great composition but the new Hundred dollar bills don’t seem very nostalgic.

  • Peter Zentjens replied

SSSSSsssssttttttt, don say that! You’re ruining the experience. ;)
Thanks for you comment Kobal. Actually, I often deliberately put new items in my nostalgia shots, like the pills in Sex, Drugs and Rock’n Roll or the Senseo cup in Radio Electricity.

    catnip addict ...

this looks like it was frozen in time. the cigaette butts seem to be left behind as the very last worker gave up and quit or simple panicked and “offed” himself leaving behind the money he knew he couldn’t take with him to the afterlife. and so it sits there, finally at rest.

  • Peter Zentjens replied

    Wow, that’s an impressive comment.
I’m a happy man knowing that this images stimulated your fantasy and made you come up with this.
Thank you, and thank you twice for the fav!

I like your series of these “painted with light” images. Do you stand behind camera with the flashlight? How big of a flashlight do you use? You said you expose for about 15 sec, and what aperture do you try to use? I saw on Emil’s tutorial that he suggest f8 for B/W and f11 for color. He said for digital f19-22. I would like to give this a try as well and any help is appreciated.
    Be well, Stan

  • Peter Zentjens

    Peter Zentjens

Do I stand behind the camera? No, the setup of the still life dictates where I stand. The one with the bottle for example, I had to be behind the bottle when the exposure started. I use the self-release in that case, position myself where I need to be, turn the flash light on and once the shutter is released I start my painting.
How big a flash light? I wouldn’t know how to answer that one. It’s fairly big, it’s an emergency lamp that automatically switches on when the electricity goes down, or that you can use manually.
The aperture is of course depending on what you try to achieve and the flash light you use. The DOF I want to reach of course also plays a very important roll. I have used f8 but I have used f22 too, depending on the situation.
Thanks for the comment and good luck with your tries.
