The Boer Wars
Here is another still life from my “Nostalgia” series. This too is created with the “painted with light” technique and digitally enhanced. The typical effect of that technique is less noticeable here though.

dont laugh at our war path attempts against the boers.
they had sharp spoons you know – we could have got hurt.
Peter Zentjens in reply to MuscularTeeth’s comment, 5 months ago
I didn’t even know you were involved. Maybe I should read that book instead of photographing it.

us aussies like getting into wars that have nothing to do with us.
out of misplaced loyalty we headed into that one cos we liked to think of ourselves as loyal british servants…
now we dont go to war for other countries
LOL.
thankfully we took their spoons away.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever hear of “painted with light” though something
about it seems very familiar! I’d be interested to learn more about that technique
for sure, because lighting is of utmost importance to me in photography. You’ve
brought an old world feeling to this photo, and the movie title “Out Of Africa” springs
to mind. (a favourite of mine. :) I like this very much!
Peter Zentjens in reply to Birgitta’s comment, 5 months ago
Thanks Birgitta. Painted with light means, basically, that you make it pitch dark and start waving about with a flashlight. You literally paint stripes of light over your subject this way. I can highly recommend a look at the work of Emil Schildt (nude art). His work is what inspired me to give it a shot, though our subjects are completely different and I don’t even come close to what he creates.

Peter Zentjens in reply to John Fish’s comment, about 1 month ago
It’s a fun technique John, why don’t you give it a try yourself? Check out the tutorial if you are interested (in my journal).
Cheers for the comment

Great image and love all your “Nostalgia” pieces , a short history lesson, gold was discovered in SA in early 1800 something. The UK controlled areas in SA where there was no gold, so began the Boer War. In other words, SA consisted of 4 provinces then. 2 Boer controlled and 2 UK controlled. Gold discovered in the 2 Boer controlled provinces but the UK wanted a slice of the action and the rest is history. Lots of heartache on both sides and many died on both sides. Boer War ended in early 1900. Yes, ended ± 100 years ago. Class dismissed, exam to follow.

Thanks Dani, both for the comment and the lesson.
I already brushed up my SA history preparing for our trip to Eastern SA later this year, so I knew a little about it.
Cheers!

You will enjoy your time here, sounds like you will be here during our summer, bring some sun cream and a hat :-D
I know we get lots of bad publicity in the media but we are actually friendly and lovable people in general.
Peter Zentjens in reply to Dani Dreyer’s comment, 23 days ago
Yeah, just before your summer actually, and there is so much beauty in your country that we are splitting it up in several chunks instead of “visiting the whole of SA” in three weeks. :)
That way we can go more into detail.
