Tobermory shipwreck

Tobermory shipwreck

Tobermory is a gorgeous little town on the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. It’s harbor not only filled with luxury yachts but also with a lot of shipwrecks, which makes it a divers paradise. It’s part of the Fathom Five National Marine Park of Canada.

Luckily for me you don’t have to dive to discover a few of the shipwrecks. Luckily because I spent to much time underwater once, without diving gear, and I’m not inclined to submerge myself for longer periods under water. ;)

This beauty caught my eye when strolling along the shore, with the duck approaching, I had to hurry but I was just in time to capture it. This image is one of my most popular wallpapers on my wallpaper website and I hope it will make me proud here also.

What an amazing photo Peter so clear you could almost put your hand in and have a drink of water.

  • Kathryn Potempski

    Kathryn Potempski

I know what you mean Peter my diving days are long gone !

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Well, I never had any diving days really. Just took one damn long unplanned dive once, without any gear and decided to keep my head above the water since then, except for the occasional “plunge”.

Fantastic image Peter. I used to dive out of Tobermory….grew up in Michigan on the Great Lakes..dove in all the cold water up there. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! Tobermory is truly a wreck divers’ paradise! You have a wonderful portfolio!

  • Mike Finley

    Mike Finley

Its a great image, and the duck is well placed. I’m not srprised it does well!

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Thanks Mike, that duck made it very important to be very fast getting the camera ready and lined up for the shot before it disappeared behind the wreck.

  • berndt2

    berndt2

Outstanding shot – so many people would walk past such a thing and still others would take a quick happy-snap, but with the composition and colours (love how the water ‘melts’ into the sky in the background) you’ve used it’s really been done justice to.

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Wow, thank you berndt2, this really is a big compliment which makes me feel even prouder of my achievement.
It’s often so, I find, that when the light isn’t really working for you, you start to put more energy in your shots. Light of course is a personal preference and I like tho shoot with bright sunlight and blue skies, a condition many photographers hate. So this fogy gray situation wasn’t really my thing and when I saw that wreck and wanted to shoot it anyway I started to look for a good composition to do it justice, as you say. And then of course came that duck and all of a sudden I had to rush. ;)
    Cheers for another great comment.

nice pic…feels a bit lonely for the sunken boat…great capture

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Don’t feel sad Ciaran! Actually it was pretty crowded in the water, I was lucky the divers hadn’t advanced to this part of the wreck yet! ;)

Not sure I can add to the above comments. Beautifully serene image, and the duck is a great bonus!

I love how I can see the rocks so clearly through the reflection of the boat up front. The textures and angles, and the balance these create in combination with the duck. This is a very nice shot. It begs to be studied in detail, and the pipe on top of the boat makes me think of a telescope for viewing what lies ahead. Peace

Thank you Makeba, for your detailed comment. It’s great to read what others see when they view this scene.

Great shot, I also think that it’s wonderful that the duck cooperated and obviously the shipwreak itself is habitat to many more creatures plus some loverly greenery. So you also have a lot of hidden things in this photo, we could use our imagination and come up with all sorts of things.

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Hey Dolphindancer, thank you very much, it’s always great to read that ones work sparks ones imagination!

no I’m ever so sorry, but I don’t know, or don’t remember, any of the details. There are several wrecks in that harbour and I’m sure if you google it up you’ll find something.

Could have sworn I commented on this before… looks like I’m a bit late though as everyone else on RB beat me to it!

This is stunning in so many ways it’s hard to know where to begin. I think it mostly lies in the engaging composition… I’m drawn in at every angle, finishing up each time looking into that… exhaust pipe?
Love the varying degrees of lucidity in the water, and that duck…so perfectly symmetrical with the outcropping rock in the lower center.
    Peter, this is a masterpiece!!
