Tobermory shipwreck

Tobermory is a gorgeous little town on the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. It’s harbor not only filled with luxury yachts but also with a lot of shipwrecks, which makes it a divers paradise. It’s part of the Fathom Five National Marine Park of Canada.
Luckily for me you don’t have to dive to discover a few of the shipwrecks. Luckily because I spent to much time underwater once, without diving gear, and I’m not inclined to submerge myself for longer periods under water. ;)
This beauty caught my eye when strolling along the shore, with the duck approaching, I had to hurry but I was just in time to capture it. This image is one of my most popular wallpapers on my wallpaper website and I hope it will make me proud here also.
You can find this image as a wallpaper on my wallpaper website

I am sure it will indeed make you proud on RB, Peter. It is near to perfect. Opportunistic (duck), and texture and composition combine for an awesome photograph. Thank you for sharing it

Peter this is just magic – apart from the fact that Tobermory was my very most favouritist Womble!!!
Peter Zentjens replied
Hi Rosalie, thank you for you very nice comment.

Peter Zentjens replied
thanks!
Kathryn Potempski
What an amazing photo Peter so clear you could almost put your hand in and have a drink of water.
Peter Zentjens replied
Thank you Kathryn. The clear clear water is a big help to see some of the wrecks if you don’t want to dive like me. ;)
Kathryn Potempski
I know what you mean Peter my diving days are long gone !
Peter Zentjens replied
Well, I never had any diving days really. Just took one damn long unplanned dive once, without any gear and decided to keep my head above the water since then, except for the occasional “plunge”.
KatB
This is beautiful! I can only wish for opportunities to take photos like this where I am.
Peter Zentjens replied
There’s hidden beauty everywhere KatB. But traveling does help. ;)

Charlie
Fantastic image Peter. I used to dive out of Tobermory….grew up in Michigan on the Great Lakes..dove in all the cold water up there. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! Tobermory is truly a wreck divers’ paradise! You have a wonderful portfolio!
Mike Finley
Its a great image, and the duck is well placed. I’m not srprised it does well!
Peter Zentjens replied
Thanks Mike, that duck made it very important to be very fast getting the camera ready and lined up for the shot before it disappeared behind the wreck.
IslandImages
wonderful image!
Peter Zentjens replied
Thanks very much Islandimages
qarrie
amazing
Peter Zentjens replied
Thank you Garrie
Peter Zentjens replied
Typo alert, that should be thank you qarrie. ;)
berndt2
Outstanding shot – so many people would walk past such a thing and still others would take a quick happy-snap, but with the composition and colours (love how the water ‘melts’ into the sky in the background) you’ve used it’s really been done justice to.
Peter Zentjens replied
Wow, thank you berndt2, this really is a big compliment which makes me feel even prouder of my achievement.
It’s often so, I find, that when the light isn’t really working for you, you start to put more energy in your shots. Light of course is a personal preference and I like tho shoot with bright sunlight and blue skies, a condition many photographers hate. So this fogy gray situation wasn’t really my thing and when I saw that wreck and wanted to shoot it anyway I started to look for a good composition to do it justice, as you say. And then of course came that duck and all of a sudden I had to rush. ;)
Cheers for another great comment.
Catherine Davis
Gorgeous, I love it. Beautiful composition and mood.
Peter Zentjens replied
Thanks Catherine, glad you like it.
Ciaran O'Hagan
nice pic…feels a bit lonely for the sunken boat…great capture
Peter Zentjens replied
Don’t feel sad Ciaran! Actually it was pretty crowded in the water, I was lucky the divers hadn’t advanced to this part of the wreck yet! ;)
Erial
Great shot. Perfect angle.
Peter Zentjens replied
Thank you Erial.
Matt Halls
Absolutely incredible capture…so very well done Peter.
Peter Zentjens replied
And thank you, again, your interest in my work is greatly appreciated.
Jan Piller
Beautiful shot!! (gee maybe it’s a little piece of the Edmund Fitzgerald!)
Peter Zentjens replied
The name doesn’ t ring a bell I’m sorry to say, so can’t help you there. ;)
Cheers for the comment Jan.
Jan Piller
A ship that sunk not far from where you took the shot – you can read about it here – a scary night indeed for all those ship workers.
http://www.ssefo.com/
Gordon Lightfoot wrote and performed one of the worlds most beautiful songs about it. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Peter Zentjens
Aha, thanks for the info Jan.
Larry149
Beautiful texture / colour plus duck! Nice how it fades away to no horizon . . . that sense of the ‘infinite lake’.
Basia McAuley
Love the composition. The clarity, angle, texture and that duck work beautifully. It’s such a beautiful and lonely image, well done and thank you for checking out my work also!
Peter Zentjens replied
And thank you for your insightful comment Basia. Checking out your work was my pleasure.
wellman
stunning work here Peter. For me its the exceptional clarity of the wreck and foreground along with the motion introduced by the accommodating duck!
Peter Zentjens replied
Thanks Wellman and thanks for explaining why you like it. Cheers
Graham McKenzi...
Not sure I can add to the above comments. Beautifully serene image, and the duck is a great bonus!
Peter Zentjens replied
Thank you very much Graham. I think serene and quite is an apt description for one of the grate lakes in fog. I’m happy you think I managed to capture that.

Excellent clarity and detail, and also a great mood – I get a sense of calm and timelessness from this.

Very nice
Peter Zentjens replied
thanks
Makeba Kedem-D...
I love how I can see the rocks so clearly through the reflection of the boat up front. The textures and angles, and the balance these create in combination with the duck. This is a very nice shot. It begs to be studied in detail, and the pipe on top of the boat makes me think of a telescope for viewing what lies ahead. Peace
Peter Zentjens replied
Thank you Makeba, for your detailed comment. It’s great to read what others see when they view this scene.
Gregoryno6
Just spotted this on the homepage and for a moment I thought it was a science-fiction illustration of – what? a derelict spaceship hanging in the sky. The duck broke the illusion; damn ducks…
Peter Zentjens replied
No, no! Thank God for ducks, it’s the duck that makes this shot. :)
Thanks for you comment.
Tatiana R
Great image to see on a homepage! I saw this image when I first started browsing Redbubble back in February, and I thought, WOW, the clarity of this picture is absolutely amazing! It is so great, so recognisable. Later I saw it printed as a card. Beautiful work!

To all of you:
I’ve been trying to say thank you to each and every one personally but I’m loosing here. I have the feeling I’m a little behind at the moment and I’m so busy replying that I don’t get around to exploring new work here on RB. So, instead of each one personally, here is a big, big thank you to all of you who have commented on this cherished image.
Bob Fox
How long did you have to wait for the duck to go by?
Peter Zentjens replied
I didn’t have to wait, I had to hurry to get the picture before it was out of the image! I saw the ducking gliding towards the wreck when this image formed in my head, after that: hurry hurry hurry
H M Bascom
I can’t remember if I commented on this already, but even if I did, it certainly deserves another comment. This is a beautiful photograph.

SueAnne
This really is one of my all time favorites, so simple, but has so many different textures, depth and color.
Peter Zentjens replied
It’s funny actually. I spent hours in studios, but this unplanned for “quick grab the camera” shot, this moment in time, became my most popular image ever. I’ll end up having to agree with Henri Cartier-Bresson
EnVee

I agree with berndt2 and the duck really does make it so the speed factor also makes this worthy of 5 stars.
Peter Zentjens replied
Thanks Philip, as Berndt2 gave me a very, very huge compliment it’s fantastic to see it repeated.
Ant Vaughan
Beautiful lighting great tones…. Feeling of solemnity though…life (plants) clinging to a sinking ship…But hey maybe the duck is gonna rescue them!!! Always hope! I think I need a coffee :O)
Peter Zentjens replied
Actually I think you had to much coffee. Just kidding, lovely imagination, that’s what you have. Thanks for the comment and for putting a smile on my face even before my eyes are truly open. :)

kcranmer
WoooooooooooooooooooooooW…the list of comments does not surprise me, think it took about a week to scroll, LOL…peter I thought this was digital art at first…amazing image!
Peter Zentjens replied
No no, this is the real stuff! I only retouched it a little to get an obnoxious little red marker out of the shot. They surround the wreck to keep boats from colliding into it.
DiEtte Henderson
Stunning Photograph! What a treasure and the little duck, how fantastic is that?!
Peter Zentjens replied
Incredibly fantastic! :o)

Thanks for the comment Jason.
William Vande...
I can see why this is one of your most popular wall papers. Great eye—great shot.

Yes, the reason why I uploaded it here in the first place, because of it’s popularity (well…) as a wallpaper.
Michael Matthews
A beautiful image. Well done.
Peter Zentjens replied
Many thanks Michael
Diane Schuster
Great shot, I also think that it’s wonderful that the duck cooperated and obviously the shipwreak itself is habitat to many more creatures plus some loverly greenery. So you also have a lot of hidden things in this photo, we could use our imagination and come up with all sorts of things.
Peter Zentjens replied
Hey Dolphindancer, thank you very much, it’s always great to read that ones work sparks ones imagination!
Steve Chapple
Instant fave….clarity in the water, composition and the timing with the duck make this such a bold image!

Do you have any info about this shipwreck (dates, cause…)
Cheers from Brasil!

billyboy
Could have sworn I commented on this before… looks like I’m a bit late though as everyone else on RB beat me to it!
This is stunning in so many ways it’s hard to know where to begin. I think it mostly lies in the engaging composition… I’m drawn in at every angle, finishing up each time looking into that… exhaust pipe?
Love the varying degrees of lucidity in the water, and that duck…so perfectly symmetrical with the outcropping rock in the lower center.
Peter, this is a masterpiece!!
Peter Zentjens
Alright, alright,
no you actually got me blushing.
Thank you for starting my day with so much praise Bilyboy, makes me feel really good. :)

Fantastic kapture, not only of the scene, but also of the mystique of the ship wreck. Love the way the duck seems to add to the solitude of this place.
