Tobermory shipwreck
Tobermory is a gorgeous little town on the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. It’s harbor not only filled with luxury yachts but also with a lot of shipwrecks, which makes it a divers paradise. It’s part of the Fathom Five National Marine Park of Canada.
Luckily for me you don’t have to dive to discover a few of the shipwrecks. Luckily because I spent to much time underwater once, without diving gear, and I’m not inclined to submerge myself for longer periods under water. ;)
This beauty caught my eye when strolling along the shore, with the duck approaching, I had to hurry but I was just in time to capture it. This image is one of my most popular wallpapers on my wallpaper website and I hope it will make me proud here also.

I am sure it will indeed make you proud on RB, Peter. It is near to perfect. Opportunistic (duck), and texture and composition combine for an awesome photograph. Thank you for sharing it

Kathryn Potempski, 8 months ago
What an amazing photo Peter so clear you could almost put your hand in and have a drink of water.
Peter Zentjens in reply to Kathryn Potempski’s comment, 8 months ago
Thank you Kathryn. The clear clear water is a big help to see some of the wrecks if you don’t want to dive like me. ;)
Kathryn Potempski, 8 months ago
I know what you mean Peter my diving days are long gone !
Peter Zentjens in reply to Kathryn Potempski’s comment, 8 months ago
Well, I never had any diving days really. Just took one damn long unplanned dive once, without any gear and decided to keep my head above the water since then, except for the occasional “plunge”.

Fantastic image Peter. I used to dive out of Tobermory….grew up in Michigan on the Great Lakes..dove in all the cold water up there. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! Tobermory is truly a wreck divers’ paradise! You have a wonderful portfolio!

Peter Zentjens in reply to Mike Finley’s comment, 7 months ago

berndt2, 7 months ago
Outstanding shot – so many people would walk past such a thing and still others would take a quick happy-snap, but with the composition and colours (love how the water ‘melts’ into the sky in the background) you’ve used it’s really been done justice to.
Peter Zentjens in reply to berndt2’s comment, 7 months ago
Wow, thank you berndt2, this really is a big compliment which makes me feel even prouder of my achievement.
It’s often so, I find, that when the light isn’t really working for you, you start to put more energy in your shots. Light of course is a personal preference and I like tho shoot with bright sunlight and blue skies, a condition many photographers hate. So this fogy gray situation wasn’t really my thing and when I saw that wreck and wanted to shoot it anyway I started to look for a good composition to do it justice, as you say. And then of course came that duck and all of a sudden I had to rush. ;)
Cheers for another great comment.

nice pic…feels a bit lonely for the sunken boat…great capture
Peter Zentjens in reply to Ciaran O'Hagan’s comment, 7 months ago
Don’t feel sad Ciaran! Actually it was pretty crowded in the water, I was lucky the divers hadn’t advanced to this part of the wreck yet! ;)

A ship that sunk not far from where you took the shot – you can read about it here – a scary night indeed for all those ship workers.

Beautiful texture / colour plus duck! Nice how it fades away to no horizon . . . that sense of the ‘infinite lake’.
Basia McAuley, 7 months ago

Not sure I can add to the above comments. Beautifully serene image, and the duck is a great bonus!
Peter Zentjens in reply to Graham McKenzie-Smith’s comment, 7 months ago
Thank you very much Graham. I think serene and quite is an apt description for one of the grate lakes in fog. I’m happy you think I managed to capture that.

mkdubose, 5 months ago
I love how I can see the rocks so clearly through the reflection of the boat up front. The textures and angles, and the balance these create in combination with the duck. This is a very nice shot. It begs to be studied in detail, and the pipe on top of the boat makes me think of a telescope for viewing what lies ahead. Peace
Gregoryno6, 5 months ago
Just spotted this on the homepage and for a moment I thought it was a science-fiction illustration of – what? a derelict spaceship hanging in the sky. The duck broke the illusion; damn ducks…

I’ve been trying to say thank you to each and every one personally but I’m loosing here. How long did you have to wait for the duck to go by?
Peter Zentjens in reply to wwROBERTLFOXcom’s comment, 4 months ago
I didn’t have to wait, I had to hurry to get the picture before it was out of the image! I saw the ducking gliding towards the wreck when this image formed in my head, after that: hurry hurry hurry

Peter Zentjens in reply to SueAnne’s comment, 4 months ago
It’s funny actually. I spent hours in studios, but this unplanned for “quick grab the camera” shot, this moment in time, became my most popular image ever. I’ll end up having to agree with Henri Cartier-Bresson
