10 Past 10

The subject of my new Nostalgia still life, part of the ongoing series, is something rather special today. Special to me at least. It’s a family piece. This is my fathers first watch. I believe, though I’m not 100% sure, he received it on his 17th birthday. Today my father is 69, so do the maths. These days, I’m the one wearing it on occasion. It’ might be scratched a little, well, a lot, but it’s still working and wearing this watch, it’s just so nostalgic. :)

As usually created using my painted with light technique , my trusty Pentax K10D, and my even more trusty (and a lot older) Pentax-A 50mm 1:1.7 lens. One new factor today though, I put in a few highlights using a laser pointer!

I feel for this. When my dad passed away, I got his old Longines from the late 50’s. It was totally oxidized and the face was barely readable… but this amazing watchmaker in Brussels restored it to its former glory and it is now a favorite possession and nostalgic treasure.
Interstingly, the time is 10 past 10… you must know watches as every watch advertisement shows the hands at 10 past 10 as it is the most aesthetic setting for the face. Surprisingly few people know this…

    Lovely work, wonderful series!

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Thank you Billyboy, happy to hear you have such a nostalgic memento of you father.
And the 10 past 10 business, they did teach me a few tricks in school. :)
Anyway, it doesn’t really work according to the rules here as the watch is completely on it’s side.
Cheers for such a wonderful comment!

Thanks, but I’ve already got a sore neck… never could stand looking at a watch on its side!!

  • Peter Zentjens replied

    LOL! ;)

another exquisite image Peter ! I always love as much the ambiance you create.
I only hope people know how difficult to achieve is the technique, so how brilliant and excellent is your work.
On my side, I didn’t invest time in it yet… well in fact, I told myself that a Master on RB was already enough ;-)
    keep it up

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Thank you Aimelle. The creation of ambience is very important for me in shooting and composing a still life. It is something that has grown through the years. However I do think lots of people just see a shot and not the hours of lighting, manipulating white balance, and subtly layering. So, it’s always great to get credit for that. Thanks a million!

Beautiful work, Peter! Love vintage watch like this one. Reminded me the one my father used to have.

  • Peter Zentjens replied

Not something the next generation will be saying, the watches they make these days don’t last for 50 years. :)
Cheers for the comment and fav Silvia!
