Skipping Girl Collage

Skipping Girl Collage

A collage of Skipping Girl taken from a photo I took of a non working neon sign. It’s a great melbourne icon located in Victoria Street and as it doesn’t work I decided to re-inject the colour back into it. This is part of a series of works based around this very cool little sign.

Skipping Girl Collage belongs to the following groups:

This is GREAT!! Love the repetition of the skipping girl, and your use of primary colours to brighten it up, and which enforces the sense of youth.

Thanks Rebecca, she is a bit overshadowed by the big shopping place next door now but I hope her creators would be happy with the colour injection.

Shows you how old I am. I can remember as a kid growing up in Melbourne and my Dad would point out the sign. Then it was working….and wonderful! Love this series.

Lovely job zee1, glad I found your work, I will order a couple of these as gifts. My Aunt now 86 at age 14 worked for the art company who designed the original sign, and spent literally hours skipping for the artists so they could get the rope and skirt movement co-ordinated for the lighting sequence. My Uncle worked as a kid with Neon Electric who put the first sign up in 1936, then he was called in from retirement to assist when the replacement sign was made around 1970 after the original had been destroyed. They will love your treatment, especially Aunt Irene, she was/is a top artist.

Why don’t you show your image to the National Trust while this is in the news right now: just ring them on 96569800 – at the worst they can only ask you for a $2 tax free donation towards the Skipping Girl restoration fighting fund.

The good news is the National Trust have just taken it over (2008) and trying to raise $60,000 to get Audrey lit up and skipping again.
