Carrickfergus Castle, one of the best preserved Norman castles in all of Ireland, is found on the coast of Belfast Lough, Northern Ireland. Built by John de Courcy in 1177, it was still used as a military base up until 1928. Today it is managed by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency as a state care historic monument.
