The old hop shed in Fall City, Washington was built in 1888. The Snoqualmie Valley has a long and varied history. This hop shed is the last reminder of what was the largest agricultural enterprise in King County during the 1880s — growing and exporting hops. Hops, a primary ingredient in brewing beer, became a major industry in valleys east and south of Seattle after hop aphids destroyed crops in traditional European hop growing centers. George Davis Rutherford built the rectangular building, measuring about 20 feet square, on a 1,500-acre hop farm near the Snoqualmie River. The building was used to dry hops before shipment. The large vented cupola created a draw for the heat generated by stoves. Low prices, the high cost of supplies, and infestation of the hop aphid brought an end to large-scale hop farming in the Snoqualmie Valley around the turn of the century. Once hundreds of hop sheds, large and small, dotted the landscape. Now this lonley shed stands as the last reminder of a nostalgic bygone era.

Born and raised in the logging town of Snoqualmie, Washington (the logging days in Snoqualmie are mostly in the past now). I currently reside in Issaquah, Washington. My Canon Rebel 450D was a Christmas gift that has kept on giving me hours and hours of pleasure. I recently aquired a Canon 5D Mark II and I am now learning to use this awesome instument. I hope you enjoy these pictures half as much as I enjoyed capturing them!
