Mirth Magik

Goodbye Bubble friends! I’ve gone legally blind outlining this guy!

2 layers, light swirls, sunlight on shower curtain. Mirth is on the front of my house, one of the few days I’ve ever seen light on him. He lives in a shady place.

Mirth: resin cast, sculpture by Walter S. Arnold

Love the green in this! Great job Arlene!

  • Arlene Zapata replied

Thanx Dave, Mirth is his name, given by the stone carver, but he is also a mythic Greenman.

This one looks even better Arlene! Why “Goodbye”, where are you off to?

  • Arlene Zapata replied

THANX Mariann! I was just joking about being blind from outlining Mirth + not being able to see redbubble anymore. Not going anywhere.

Arlene, so cool you found a great way to show him off to us! And I know what you mean… I’ve been legally blind for years. Grin & bear it !!

  • Arlene Zapata replied

    Thanx for stopping by Bill!
I’m sure you are legally blind by now! That is why I don’t usually make art like this. I’m also not as patient as you, this was started in early December. Not much into suffering for my art, p.shopping for my job gives me enough blindness! ;>)

Ah, the Green Man. A very ancient & iconic image. I swear I once saw him when staring at a tree whilst tripping on LSD.

  • Arlene Zapata replied

Hmmmm…I though he was related to Baccaus + liked wine!

I don’t know about any connection to Baccus, I think of the Green Man as being more of a Pagan origin rather than Classical, and I have a theory that he is an elemental spirit or god that became visible to people of olde after they consumed certain mushrooms perhaps, in a shamanic fashion. My experience was a long time ago, and I much prefer a glass of red wine myself these days! If not a Classicist, though, he certainly makes a classic image.

:>) THANX! Here you go, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Man:
The Green Man motif has many variations. Found in many cultures around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities springing up in different cultures throughout the ages. Primarily it is interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, or “renaissance,” representing the cycle of growth each spring. Some speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history.

In Wicca, the Green Man has often been used as a representation of the Horned God, a mix of ancient Pagan gods such as the Celtic Cernunnos and the Greek Pan.
