Guard your heart . . . . by

Illustration for novel.
Scripture in Proverbs:
Above ALL else ~ Guard your Heart
for it is the Wellspring of Life.
hmmm . . . . .
Graphite drawing 15 × 20″ on hot press illustration board.
Hands need more development. Need that 4:00 clock North light to shoot good quality pix and I missed it.
ahh rats!! it’s not like just baking muffins you know. Ha haaa. These drawings always take their sweet time and some parts go quick and some parts are . . . so . . . . flipping . . . flapping . . . crazy making . . slow. A dear friend of mine once said – “it’s like waiting for a baby to be born”. yeah kinda is. :))
As a side note:
My students enjoyed seeing the beginning of this drawing and want to see how it turned out. I was telling them, the reference photos are a guide, a starting point to build off of. Here is the shot I took for this piece and you can see the facial expression is more exaggerated in the drawing. The rest of the elements came slowly as I was working on this. Thanks for taking time to view.

enjoy making direct work from natural materials in my prairie and wildlife sanctuary.
i am a very restless person and I work in many different ways with a variety of media.

One cannot collect all the beautiful shells on the beach. One can collect only a few, and they are more beautiful if they are few.

Brilliant work, yvonca! Hands? It’s the eyes I’m looking at!

  • Yes?? Thank you Hon. I made sure to do those first before I even tried to develop the rest of this. That’s really good to hear and I greatly appreciate it. :))

Nourish your heart! Fingers need a bit more legnth is all!

  • I love that word. NOURISH. what a picture, not just to feed . . but to nourish means (to me) to choose with care the finest possible foods . . . yeah WOW. Thank you so much for that thoughtful and resonating comment Mark.
Hands. That one left one, keeps wanting to be a child’s hand. I’m trying to listen well. x.

the eyes draw you in – agree with Mark re:hands – also what does the raven have in his mouth?
    It is a beautiful drawing

  • i think it’s a pearl . . wait. . . . yeah he says it’s a pearl. just being a goof. I am a bit unsure abot how to reslolve the fingers, but I guess it will come to me. Thanks so much Karen.

    Perching
    on my shoulder
    at the crossroads
    A Blue black
    charcoal Raven,
    gatekeeper to the void,
    bringing a pearl
    of wisdom
    to whisper in my ear.
    behind me
    the land is cleared
    of stone and scrub
    the boulders piled
    high with the phallic
    arrogance of a prick
    that took the fields
    of nature apart
    to sow
    a single crop
    and leave
    diversity
    to someone else
    to worry about.
    I too have
    tried to grow
    many thoughts
    at once in the
    sweet meadow
    where dreams
    are born
    to scamper
    in the spring fields
    of thought
    a scared site
    is ploughed
    and the spirits
    are shaken.
    Restlessly
    they hover
    and gather
    as we watch
    the sparks
    of the camp fire
    fly like fairies
    and disappear.
    The corpse of the
    queen is taken
    on a feather
    and carried
    in the funeral
    cortege to
    the drones
    and drums
    of sorrow
    behind her
    in a golden
    hazel nut
    chariot
    the king.
    An eyeless
    spirit in
    sackcloth
    stares at me
    blankly
    before
    they depart
    he wails
    in a hoarse
    voice
    I make out
    the words
    my hands
    fold
    across me
    as he says
    “Guard your heart”
    and leaves me
    like a leaf
    shaken.

  • damn boy! you took a drawing and made it into a movie. I remember I was in a tough place when I drew this one, painfully sooo slowly eking out the details like waiting for seeds to sprout . . . not knowing what kind . . weeds or fruit . . while what it echoed . . . my own desire to guard my heart . . too late after the horse had torn out of the gates. tis a brilliant writing.
