This is the sanctuary of St. Dora’s a Carpathian style wooden church i the Hutsul region of Ukraine’s Carpathian mts. These churches are built entirely without nails.
The hutsuls have traditionally been incredible craftspeople, and their churches are no exception. Up until the second half of the twentieth century they were totally self sufficient. They even made their own threads, from which their clothing came. The threads came from materials that they produced themselves. They always kept plenty of sheep and goats and they harvested the forests wisely. Today there is a problem with deforestation in the region.
