Man and Broom, Ukraine by Yuri Lev

This man, whom you will also see in the next photo, was sweeping the street in the Ukrainian city of Ivanofrankivsk when I stumbled upon him. He asked to be photographed under the sculpture of Taras Shevchenko, the great Ukrainian bard.

“I lived under the Poles, the Germans and Russians and survived them all.” He lamented triumphantly. Now I’d like to have a picture under the symbol of Taras Shevchenko. I agreed to oblige him so he put down his broom and posed.

Yuri .. this is magnificent. Bless his heart … I hope you were able to give him a copy of this wonderful image? There’s such an innocence to him … you’ve captured something very special, my friend!!! You were in the Ukraine My mother’s parents came from there … how I’d love to travel there some day!!!!!

  • Hi Lois,
What a thrill it was to open RB and find all of your visits and comments…and I was added to your watchlist as a bonus! Thank you. So you’re part Ukrainian? You should visit the EVERYTHING UKRAINIAN group. I’m happy that you appreciate the man with the broom. The moment happened almost twelve years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. As I’ve mentioned before, one of the reasons I’m a photographer is that doing creative work helps me to remember my life. How sad it is about the state of human affairs that we can hardly remember what happened to us two weeks ago or two days ago for that matter. Clicking that shutter puts us in the present, and the present is all that we really have. Thank you again for your vivits and kind, insightful comments.

Amazing composition and use of a negative space!!!!! The story is so striking!:)

  • Thank you again Paulina. Did you emigrate from Ukraine? I appreciate your use of artistic terms like “negative space.” One doesn’t hear that from photographers that often. Your paintings are wonderful, very light with a masterful, expressionistic use of color.
