Auschwitz-Birkenau I
Remains of the Birkenau Concentration Camp, partly destroyed by the Nazis to cover up the horrors of what was done there. Birkenau was the last stop on a purpose built reailway line to transport jews and other people targeted by the Nazis to be housed and executed here. This was my first visit to the camp but I would like to go back one day when my son is older so he can appreciate how lucky he is to live in safety and comfort.
Taken with Canon 450D & 18 – 55mm IS Lens

As a Jew, all of this is still incomprehensible, and even more so after reading the book ” Hitler’s Willing Executioners”. As a lace like this should be captured, there is torment and tears from God every where in this art. Superb.

Thank you so much for your comment Martin, it was a very strange feeling to photograph a place of such importance and emotive on every level. It surprised me to find beauty there, like a fox who is hiding in this image who reminded me that it was a place of life and survival as well as a place of death and tragedy

This photograph has a very chilling and upsetting effect on me, especially that powerful image across the bottom. This is sad but necessary photography.
Rachael Macleod replied
Thanks Cora, it was a very strange experience and I was not exactly comfortable taking pictures but somehow I felt it would be worse not to acknowledge what I saw and felt there
