Railway runs about 20 km along the Southeast bank of the Lake with the steep cliffs of Montana Mountain beside it. Built to supply people and materials to the gold rush, it was started in May 1898 with the first train in to Whitehorse in July 1900 after the Gold Rush was pretty much over.
While it continued to run, supplying the fleet of river boats from Whitehorse to Dawson City, it again came into prominence during the building of the Alaska Highway during WWII.
It again became viable with the opening of the large mine in Faro in the Yukon and the lead/zink ore was transported to the Skagway docks. With the building of a road from Skagway to Whitehorse the RR ceased operation in 1982 but phoenix like it arose again as a tourist attraction for the growing Alaska cruise market. fuji S5Pro
