Lake Bennett

Yukondick

Whitehorse, Canada

Artist's Description

Lake Bennett, on the border between the Yukon and British Columbia is the headwater of the Yukon River. In 1898 a mass of humanity crossed the Coast Mountains, shown here, by the Chilkoot Trail in the great Klondike Gold Rush. After crossing over and reaching this lake, they wer faced with building some form of watercraft to travel through a series of lakes and down the Yukon River to Dawson City – a journey of almost 1000 km. While placid in this shot, Lake Bennett can become quite rough .
