Grizzly Bear on the Chilkoot River by

North American Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis). Views 1071 Features 9
There is competition every Fall along the Chilkoot and Chilkat Rivers near Haines Alaska between anglers and bears. Bears always win. We waited above the river bank to see what the bears would do and fortunately this fellow looked back to see what we would do – I tripped the shutter. Unfortunately, I did not have a tripod with my fishing gear [next year!].

Played with photography since early High School. Since moving to the Yukon in 1997 I have become much more involved and am now comfortable in Photoshop although there is always more to learn. the Yukon is a great canvas and would recommend it for most everyone’s Bucket List

    That is impressive, great capture.

  • It could have been a little sharper [low light, long VR lens] so next year I will take a tripos as well as fishing gear

Great shot, Dick, nice to see the ex FARce members on here, welcome to Redbubble. Wilf (Hope that shot was with a telephoto lens)

  • Guess there has been a mass exodus. I am also posting a few to PhotoSIG where the critiquing is much more on point with a lot less back slapping – no trying to get All Time Bests. I like that I can post a high res shot here where you can see that I shot with a slow shutter and no tripod – next year a tripod goes into my fishing gear.

Wow, amazing capture…that poor fish didn’t stand a chance =D

  • this was after the fact. Fish had already spawned, died and floated down stream. Cycle of life – I just don’t want to become part of it.

He sure did a number on that fish.. nice look at life in the wild.

  • The fish is a dead sockeye that had already spawned. Better it than me. Thanks

    Just a fantastic picture. Beautiful.

  • Many thanks. Unfortunately, I will not be able to do my annual fishing trip to Haines as I will be in Eastern Canada – the good part is the fantastic Fall colours in Eastern Ontario at that time of year. Next year – Haines- Fishing

    You sure get around.

  • this is my home territory. Haines is about a 4 hour drive from my home and we go fishing there most Septembers. We moved to the Yukon 16 years ago from Ontario where my mother in law still lives pus a daughter and many friends. We also like to travel and usually do it in 2 month chunks
