What I like most.
Is that we both wind down the windows.
That doesn’t seem special on a sunny day, winding along the coast, talking of imaginary houses we would like to live in, him perched above the mountains, me swimming through sandcastles beneath the sea. We yell as the wind snatches our words and bounces them back off the windscreen, as the scent of hot tarmac infuses our tastebuds. Causes the road ahead to shimmer, to flicker mirages of things we could be heading for. Things we can’t ever seem to catch. No matter how fast we drive.
It is good on a sunny day, driving with the windows down.
But what I like most.
Is when it rains.
When it cracks a warning, when the sky threatens colours, my seatbelt tightens, my eyelids half close and those windows come all the way down. I let the rain right in and it beats hard against my face. When I close my eyes and smile, when my eyes burn so hot under my lids I’m glad I’m not driving. But when I look back, his smile is as fierce and his window is down too. And the wind whips hair around our throats, whips and words trip from our lips as we sing along to a devil blaring on the radio. We shake our wet hair, the engine roars, we shout, we scream to be heard above the storm, as we hurl our little hurricane around the car.
That’s what I like most.
