Hatties Close Stairs

At the first sharp bend in Guthrie Street, going downhill from Chambers Street, there’s a tiny street which is mostly a flight of steps, called Hatties Close.

The door on the right leads into The GRV, and through the gates at the bottom of the stair you can see the space that was left after the Great Fire of Edinburgh in December 2002.

My dad and family were born and raised in Guthrie Street, in fact so was my grandmother. On visits when I was a child I used to stand at the top of these stairs – used to scare the life out of me for some reason. Mind you it was never as light as your shot now shows it to be. Great memories, thank you.

Wow. Thank you for that comment.

It’s probably lighter now since December 2002, that’s for sure.

I worked in Guthrie Street for nearly a year back over 20 years ago, and I just remember that stair – it was a shadowy close then.
