An Edinburgh baker's window
Douglas the baker’s has been at 105 Leith Walk for decades: a small survivor of the old independent Scottish bakers’ tradition. I used to live just off Leith Walk, and it was my boast that within ten minutes walk I could buy bread of six different nationalities: Italian, Sicilian, Polish, Bangladeshi, and Chinese, and Scottish, of course, from Douglas.
Next to the gloss of Gregg’s or the fall of Crawford’s, Douglas looks basic, but everything they make tastes good, from the bran scones you can see piled in the left-hand corner of the window to the apple sponges at the right.

Go on Douglas! Bake on, bake on, bake on, bake on…I have just finished a Rebus novel, Naming the Dead so was in an Edinburgh moment. Always nice to see some small independent retailers surviving the storm.

Yes, The Walk is a complete United Nations … I remember this baker from the 70s … brilliant shot!!

It’s been around and been just like that for as long as I can remember. I have to admit a particular weakness for their ring doughnuts and their bran scones – they deep fry the doughnuts till they’re dark brown and crispy-greasy, yum! totally unhealthy but delicious. The bran scones are lovely, needing no justification. I put up three more shots, and am going to do a post on the Douglas bakery on my photoblog.
Actually, it would be cool to do photoposts of all the bread shops on Leith Walk – there’s a project for next Saturday…
