Maid of the Forth

The island of Inchcolm is in the Firth of Forth, nearer Fife than the Lothians. Alexander I was stuck on the island for a few stormy days in 1123, and the island’s holy hermit fed him. In kingly gratitude, and also possibly to sleep more comfortably and eat better if he were stuck on the island again in future, Alexander founded an Augustinian abbey on the island.
