I have been thinking for a long time that Civics education is badly needed in schools. I suggest you listen to Richard Dreyfus on Youtube.com and you will hear why.
But let me tell you some of my thoughts on this subject.
First, the rich/ republicans/cooporate people in this country just love it that a lot of people are stupid when it comes to civics. And when an election comes, they fill the air with nonsence, and deception about things. They use fear tactics. They say stuff like “you dont want that big bad boogie government telling you what to do when it comes to your health care. It will be bad. It will be bad. Private health care is better.”
Now civics would teach a person to ask themselves. Gee can I afford any health care? Gee I have none, or gee I have huge copays, or I have a policy that denies even routine medical coverage that I need. And my parents cannot afford the drugs they need. Maybe this current system needs to be changed. Maybe I should look beyond the fear tactics I hear about government health care being soooooooooooooo bad. In short civics will teach critical thinking about health care and other important issues.
It is so funny to hear the elite say we need to do better at science and math in this country. Yes science and math are very very important. But if we dont learn how to make correct political choices, all the science and math will not mean a hill of beans. For example if there is major terrorist attack, in the aftermath, we cannot let a government strongman tell us that we must now follow him under penalty of death. There has to be a balance of power as in conceived in the constitution. So civics first, science and math second.
Right now people vote against their best interests. If you are poor, or even in the middle class, you cannot vote for a candidate who wants to give you $5000 a year for a private health care policy when and very average policy costs $12000. You must breakdown and study the platforms of the candidates. Civics classes will encourage you to do this and teach you how. They will show you how to go to the candidates websites and review the proposed policies. You will need to study a bit. But you can learn how to do this in civics class.
Civics is slightly more important than science and math
